Unable to Download Pictures--Used to Work Before IE7 Beta-X

My previous post on this subject submitted on 8/24/2006 was removed for
reasons unknown…. There was nothing of a derogatory nature contained within
it…. I do not know why it was removed.

Because I still seek an answer to my question, I will repost it again. If
it gets removed again, I would simply ask that an explanation be provided to
the email address supplied when I registered. If I am doing something
“wrongâ€, I cannot make “adjustments†if no one tells me what it is that is
considered “offensiveâ€. Here is the gist of what I stated previously
(although I thought I said it better before):

Around the middle of June, I installed IE7 Beta2. Shortly thereafter, I
noticed that emails with graphics in them were no longer appearing—even from
those sources that were already part of my Safe Senders list and/or Safe
Sender’s domain.

For most of those emails, upon right-clicking on the “Red-X†placeholder, I
am not even presented with the option to download the image (i.e., the option
is not even present)…. The scant few images that still give me the option,
still fail to download—even after I tell Outlook to do so.

Uninstalling IE7 Beta 2 and installing IE7 Beta 3 did not alter this behavior.

I soon discovered this phenomenon was not isolated to new emails. Emails
for which I had previously (i.e., successfully downloaded images), were also
found missing their respective images, and re-downloading them were no longer
options, either.

From what I have gleaned elsewhere, I firmly believe this could be an issue
associated with IE7, as well as Vista and Office 2007. For the record, I
possess Office 2003.

Performing a Repair—as well as a reinstallation of Outlook failed to remedy
this issue. Does anyone know what the solution might be? I want my images
back.

Roady,

Thanks for your reply....

I don't recall specifically looking to see if IE6 (upon uninstall of IE7 B2)
allowed download of pictures. You see. I really have 2 problems....

It was not in the IE6 state very long before I installed IE7B3.... At that
time (and in fact, I still am having) another issue that is a higher
priority: While connected to the Internet (via Dial-up, unfortunately), I
cannot bring up any web page--Same is true when in No Add-in Mode. In that
mode, at least the No Add-in page builds, however normal IE7 just displays a
blank white page. Attempting to navigate anywhere results in the Connection
"throbber" just cycling forever. I am connected. I just can't go anywhere.

I believe this could be some KB Office/Windows download that got installed
after my intial IE7 B2 install. Initially, IE7 B2 did work, however, it
stopped working. I incorrectly thought this was some sort of a built-in
"feature" of IE7 B2, as IE7 B3 had just become (at that time) available. So
I downloaded IE7 B3 at work, burnt it to a CD, and took it home, uninstalled
IE7 B2, tried to navigate the Internet on IE6, but had the same problem....
Hoping IE7 B3 would fix this, I immediately installed IE7 B3. It did NOT fix
my Internet navigation problem, and it also made no difference to my download
graphic problem.

The navigation issue has all the earmarks of being a ZoneAlarm issue....
Even though I had the version of ZoneAlarm that was "supposed" to work with
IE7 (that was 6.1.744.001). The reason I suspect this is because I could
remove IE7 from ZoneAlarm's Program Control list of applications, then start
IE7, but ZA would never inform me of a "new" application that was trying to
connect to the Internet.... I was connected, but it acted as if I was not
connected since I could not go anywhere....

Since I know that, eventually, IE7 will reach a state that should be able to
work with various applications such as ZA, I am hoping that a clean install
of the final flavor of IE7 will, at least, rectify my Internet navigation
issue. Don't know to what extent, if any, this also has to do with my
Graphic Download ability. I guess it could have everything to do with it....

Thanks for letting me know that IE7 RC1 has been released. What
recommendations do you have for my installing it, since I have not had a
stellar experience with IE7 B2/3? Assuming I go forward and install it (I
will need to get it via my work PC, since Firefox cannot visit the download
site--and since my current IE7 cannot navigate anywhere, this IS my only
recourse).

From what the Release Notes contain, RC1 appears to be able to be installed
over top of the Beta releases.... Should I do that, or should I go through
an uninstall, first?

Thanks in advance.

Better turn around that statement. ZA is the one that has to update. For
testing purposes completely disable it or uninstall it and see if IE works
now.

You can use either method; downgrade/upgrade. If you want to use IE7RC1 the
upgrade should work just as well and because of dependencies might be the
better choice.

Roady,

Obtained and installed IE7RC1 last night. Because the Release Notes now
bear no mention of ZA incompatibility, I tried the install with ZA still in
place. Unfortunately, however, I still have the exact same behavior as
before. I ran out of time last night to deal with uninstalling ZA and
repeating the install of IE7RC1 without ZA being present. I will attempt
that experiment tonight and report my findings.

At present, both my IE browser connecting problem, as well as the
originally-reported issue pertaining to the download of email graphics still
remains. Thanks for your continued suggestions. If you have any other
thoughts on what could be the underlying problem(s), I'd also welcome those.

Roady,

Here are the promised results of uninstalling IE7RC1 and ZoneAlarm--then
reinstalling IE7RC1 first, then reinstalling ZoneAlarm in an attempt to
remedy my IE7 connection problem....

It still does not work. And embedded graphics still cannot be downloaded
from within Outlook.

Also, before reinstalling ZA, and while NOT connected to the Internet, I
started IE7, and it exhibits the same behavior that I see when I am connected
(a blank web page). Therefore, I can conclude that ZA has nothing to do with
the problem I am experiencing, as at this point, ZA was not yet reinstalled.

As a side note, I used the Network Diagnostic tool that comes bundled within
IE7.... While I know this is more geared towards wireless and broadband type
connections (which I do not possess), it does show that neither http nor
https connections are working. Apparently, ftp does work--at least according
to the diagnostic results.

When ZA was reinstalled, ZA still fails to even recognize IE7's attempt to
connect, as it never displays a popup that IE7 is trying to connect, on IE7's
first connection attempt. A look at ZA's Program Control does not list IE7
as an application that is cleared (or otherwise) to connect to the Internet.
Conversely, Firefox has no problem connecting, and ZA properly alerted me
when Firefox made its first attempt to connect after having just reinstalled
ZA.

Based on the Network Diagnostic results, what recommendations might you have
for further troubleshooting?

Regards,

MG
