Unable to display the folder. The Calendar folder could not be fou

We are running Office 2003/Exchange 2003 and have created resources for our
conference rooms so staff may check each resource's calendar either by using
File > Open > Other's User Folder > then selecting the appropriate resource
and confirming that calendar is the object to be opened OR by using the
Calendar view in the Navigation Pane and selecting the appropriate calendar
from "Other Calendars". We also have many staff who have shared their
calendars with other staff. I know our setup and sharing privileges are
correct . . . I'm our technical trainer and MS certified in Outlook and have
confirmed both setup and rights.

However, I have a growing number of users who have reported (and I've
confirmed with workstation visits) that using either method to view resource
calendars and/or staff calendars may result in an "Unable to display the
folder. The Calendar folder could not be found." error message. This appears
to only occur when the user is trying to check multiple calendars. The
problem is not consistent and appears "random". The same calendars are not
affected each time. The only work-around we've found is to have the user
close Outlook and re-launch the application and then immediately check the
calendar that was previously problematic. I have searched without success
the MS Knowledgebase for even a mention of this problem but did find the
exact same issue reported on http://www.officekb.com/ . . . complete URL is
http://www.officekb.com/Uwe/[email protected].
However, no resolution was posted.

Our office is Outlook dependent and the close Outlook/re-launch Outlook
workaround is NOT an acceptable resolution.

We have not globally installed SP1 as this update appeared to create a
printing problem when a user attempted to print a copy of a shared calendar.

Any assistance in identifying the cause of this problem and/or any suggested
resolution will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I was wondering if you were able to find a solution to the problem. I've
had the same issue and still no resolution. I have seen it posted several
times so we aren't the only ones, but never have a seen a solution attached.

BTW, I am running SP1 and I still see the problem. It is sometimes
intermittent and the number of calendars I can open varies from all (6
resource calendars) to only 1 (other than my own calendar).

A few other users have reported similar problems.

Cheers,

Karan

No, I've not found a resolution at this time. I've seen the problem on units
pre-SP1 install and post SP1 install. I'm continuing to look and will update
this if I find anything to report.

Sadly, I could still find no mention of the issue on the MS Knowledge Base.

Thanks!
Debbie

Hey Debbie,

I have also had the issue pre and post SP1 (client and server). I've posted
the issue in a Microsoft managed newsgroup and they are supposed to respond
within 1-2 days so I'll let you know if I get anywhere. I will post here,
but if you like send me your email address and I'll also contact you
directly (send your email to (e-mail address removed) ... remove .nospam
and .dot).

Cheers,
Karan

Hi y'all,

this issue is due to the corrupted .ost file, if you've configured Outlook
clients to use cached mode. To solve it close the client and delete .ost file
and then reopen Outlook again. You should be all set for a while....

Thanks maarit,

My question to you is will this issue show up intermittently if the OST is
corrupt as you say? On my laptop I can sometimes get all the resources or
calendars open and other times I can't get more than 1 or 2. I've had the
same OST file for a while (including a restore from backup when I re-imaged
my machine).
Right now I can open all of them ... I can bet you that sometime in the next
week when I go to try it I'll get the error again.

Thanks,
Karan

Thanks for the suggested resolution; however, when I employed this suggestion
my users were able to access the multiple calendars for a maximum of 15
minutes before the problem reappeared. If anyone has any other suggestions,
PLEASE share them!!

We had the same problem, and deleting the .ost was just a temporary fix
because after a few times of opening and closing Outlook, we
experienced the same issue. What solve our problem was moving the
user's mailbox to the original mailbox store on Exchange.

Hi

I'm having the same problem with our users. Not using cached mode or have
ost files. Again appears randomly, v hard to diagnose. Any ideas would be
great.

Hi all -

Well - this seems to be an issue all over the place - we have it occurring
here also, just 1 person right now (that we know of). So I get the feeling
the consensus is to move them to a different message store - is that working
for people right now? It's a pain for me to justify this to our ops group so
I would like to confirm that has fixed it for others before I go ahead and
have them try it. Currently we just delete the ost as the user logs on - a
bit of a pain, but it "seems" to work.

Please let me know!

Thanks!

hello, I was wondering if anyone was able to comeup with a workaround other
than restarting outlook. seems like an unfair workaround...

Hi all -

Well I have to admit moving them to a different message store seems to
completely fix the problem - we haven't tried moving them out and back, but
that hasn't been needed to be done - the different stores we have set up (and
trust me we have a ton) seem to have people in the incorrect place anyway.

They have been up and running now for several weeks with no reoccurrance
of the issue. (knock on wood, because now that I've said that, they are going
to break again...)

have a gread day!

Moving the mailbox to an alternate store worked.

But, upon moving the mailbox to the original store, the issue occurs.

Add one more to the list with the same issue. We can open two calendars no
problem, three no go.

It doesn't matter which two we open either. The third always gives the same
error.

As a matter of fact, if we open user A only, it works. If we close out user
A and open users B and C, that works. If we then try to open User A we get
the dreaded error message:

Unable to display the folder. The Calendar folder could not be opened

I found the same issue in the knowledge base for outlook 98.

Has anyone tried using the NoOST=3 setting in the registry?

I'm about to.

Unable to display the folder. Calendar folder could not be found

Most of the user mailboxes were stored on the same mail server, but we continued having problems, after deleting the user's local .ost cache file. We've discovered that deselecting "Use Cached Exchange Mode" in the user's E-mail Accounts/Exchange Server Settings box, fixed the problem for our user, in Outlook 2003. This appears to maintain an online connection to the Exchange server. May not be recommended for all users in an organization, due to its bandwidth usage. Hope this helps....
