unable to connect to the internet

I am trying to get Windows 2k Pro to work on one of my computers. The problem is that I can't get it to connect to the internet. I've read several posts on this board about it, and tried some of the fixes (I'll describe below).

First, my config: using a cable modem on Comcast, through an Allied Telesyn ethernet adapter. At first, ipconfig returns all 0's for IP and subnet mask. Then I run the internet connection wizard, selet LAN where appropriate, make sure all boxes are unchecked for proxy server etc., and close the wizard. When I then go to check ipconfig, it returns a 169 IP address, which I've been told is an internal ip addy, not useful for accessing the internet.

I've taken the IP settings of my main computer, and manually placed them in the LAN settings under Network Connections (I don't know the DNS's, as my main comp is set to detect automatically). Ipconfig then returns the manually set IP, subnet mask, and default gateway. I can ping my IP address, but external pings to www.microsoft.com, or any other addy, get an 'unknown host' message.

Whenever I open IE, it says there is no connection. I have tried installing the latest drivers for my NIC, but nothing has changed. The com lights on the NIC indicate a good connection, as do the lights on my cable modem (motorola surfboard).

I am at a loss here. Nothing seems to work, nothing I have done gets the connection working. Anyone have any ideas, or need more info? I could really use the help. Thanks!

Hello,

I don't know about Comcast, but it is possible that they lock the internet
connection to the MAC address. So, when you try to connect with another
computer than you usually do, it will not work. Also, if your ISP uses DHCP,
they most likely do not accept computers with a static IP on their network
(so setting the network settings will not work). I suggest that you call
Comcast, and tell them that you are trying to connect to Internet with
another computer than you usually do, and they can probably help you with
this.

If you know that they are not locking the internet connection to one
computer only (ie, you have tried this before, and it worked), the first
thing i would check is the cables, the NIC (is it broken?) and other
hardware devices (if any). I don't think that a static IP will ever work, so
there is no idea of trying with that anymore.

Hope this helps!

Are you by any chance using Mcafee Virus Scan v 7? I had this identical problem earlier this year when my IP address suddenly changed to 169.xxx.xxx.xxx and nothing I did corrected the problem until I went through the McAfee uninstall procedure which includes deleting in excess of 300 registry entries

Hope this helps
