Unable to connect to domain eventid:11153

We are unable to connect workstations to our domain from only one particular
subnet. Whenever we do we get this error:

"01/20/2006 12:59:28 11153 Warning No descri DnsApi

DT04636

The system failed to register network adapter with settings: Adapter
Name : {07E3074D-5E9F-42BB-A61A-802A0A17B3A4} Host Name : DT04636
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : mtsallstream.com
DNS server list : 142.160.154.101, 142.160.139.101
Sent update to server : 142.160.154.101
IP Address(es) : 142.160.188.104

The reason it could not register was because the DNS server refused the
dynamic update request. This could happen for the following reasons: (a)
current DNS update policies do not allow this computer to update the DNS
domain name configured for this adapter, or (b) the authoritative DNS server
for this DNS domain name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register a DNS host (A) resource record using the specific DNS domain name
for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. "

We can ping the dns server and dns port from the PC. We have changed the
primary DNS server.

This is a problem that is specific to this subnet only, we have 50 other
subnets that do not have this problem. It is not a pc problem because we
brought a working pc from a different subnet and tried it on the "bad" subnet
and we got the same problem.

LarryJ,

I have seen this happen before when there is one of two things
happening:

1. There is already a record for the host and it can't delete it
correctly.
2. The DNS suffix assigned to the NIC is different from the server.

Other than that, I would make sure that there isn't a signing problem on
the DNS so that the workstations are able to update it directly.

The error you posted has nothing to do with joining a computer to a domain,
it is strictly a DNS registration error. Now, you may be getting the error
because the DNS server does not support DDNS updates but does it support the
Active Directory domain?
Ping is not the correct tool for testing this beyond ICMP connectivity,
there are other protocols required for Active Directory and many ports, any
one of which will cause you to not be able to join a domain.
If it is specific only to this subnet, I would start by looking at the
firewall.
Use nslookup to query these DNS servers for the SRV records. If you get the
SRV records with the DC's A records then it is likely a firewall issue.
