unable to communicate to router

J

JLZ

PC was unable to communicate to router or any other
externeal devices. So we reoved router, and connected
modem directly to PC and tried renewing IP address be
repairing Local Area Connection, and received the
following error: "Repair Operation Failed Renewing IP.
Unable To Repair. Failed Flushing the ARP cache"

Attempted to reinstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), but
when attempting to execute the "ipconfig/flushdns" we
received the following error: "An internals error
occured. The pipe is being closed. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support for help. Unable to query
TCP/IP interface table"

Ran system Restore, and restored PC back to yesterday
when everything was working. Was able to execute all
commands to reinstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and
customer then pulled valid IP (router still disconnected)
68.118.238.9, and she was online. We connected router
back up, and she was still online, but a few minutes
later, we lost connection again, and received same error
as before when attempting to repair connection and
reinstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Disconnected Router again, to see if router was possibly
causing these error. Restored computer as far back to
10/23/03. After restore was complete, connction was back
up and customer was online.

This is the attempt the specialist went through to help
me with the internet connection and router connection.
Any suggestions to solve this.

I'm not completely sure I understand the hardware setup.

1. If you have a pc connecting directly to the provider via a cable modem,
then the pc gets the ip address from the provider.

pc ----------------> Cable Modem >>>>>>>>>ISP
68.118.238.9

2. If you have a router, then the router would normally obtain and hold the
ip address from the provider.
It would have a second address which was on the internal network in order to
communicate with the devices plugged into it. It ROUTES ip traffice from the
internal 192.168 network out onto the isp network subnet of which
68.118.238.9 is a member.

pc---------------------------------Router >>>>>>>>>>>>ISP

192.168.0.7 192.168.0.2 68.118.238.9

If you are in situation 1 the pc is in effect connected directly to the isp.
It should be picking up dns info and default gateway info from the isp.
You should see this if you run the command

ipconfig/all

However in situation 2, the router obtains and holds the isp gateway and dns
information and the ip address supplied. It should have a second address on
the same subnet as the local network in order to route traffic from the
local subnet to the isp.
In this situation, the pc should be set up with an internal ip address and
its gateway address should be set to the local address on the router.

If you just unplug and plug cables to get from situation 1 to 2, to start
with, the pc and the router will both have the same external ip address of
68.118.238.9, unless the ISP uses a random allocation of ip addresses. Even
in this situation, the pc will still have the old address of 68.118.238.9
and its gateway will still be set to whatever the isp allocated, this will
no longer work, since the pc is connected to an intenal subnet router port,
and requires an ip address on that same subnet.

A further complication will be as to how the pc gets its internal 192.168
address and gateway info, either through dhcp or manually set. The router
internal 192.168 address needs to be set manually, this cannot be
dynamically allocated as it always needs to be the same.

The router if its smart enough may have a dhcp facitlity, if so, you have to
be careful that if its turned on, it doesn't conflict with an existing dhcp
server. If you have internet connection sharing enabled on any pc, then it
will also act as a dhcp server and you could get a conflitct, as there is no
facility to set dhcp scopes in ics.

Paul

Have you manually configured any static routes on it.
Is it set up to use OSPF or RIP ?
How does it get its ip address, is it configured on the router, or does it
use dhcp ?
How does the customers pc get its ip address, is it static or from a dhcp
server ?
Does the router have the ability to act as a DHCP server, and if so, is
there a potential dhcp server conflict ?

Whats the make and model ? I really need to see a manual for it.

Don't worry about explaining the issue with your router,
and just tell them you have your PC directly connected to
your Cable Modem, and that your getting a "169.254.x.x"
IP address. You are setup on a dynamic IP address, which
means you get your IP address from a DHCP server.
..server.

Just let them them know that you get the following error
when you try and "repair" your Local Area Connnection
(renew IP Address):
"Repair Operation Failed. Renewing IP. Unable To Repair.
Failed Flushing the ARP cache"

Then when you try and reinstall TCP/IP, you get the
following error when attempting to execute the command
ipconfig/flushdns: "An internal error occurred. The pipe
is being closed. Please contact Microsoft Product Support
for help. Unable to query TCP/IP interface table"

DEAR PAUL:

Above is the tech's reply to your question.

Hi Joanne,

Can you run an ipconfig/all

on the pc from a command prompt and post the output.

start/run
cmd

ipconfig/all > jo1.txt

If you have windows xp professional get a systeminfo output aswell

systeminfo > jo2.txt

Then open jo1.txt with notepad and copy/paste the contents into a reply
post.
Do same if jo2.txt exists.

How is the pc connected to the cable modem, is it via a usb port or from a
nework card.

Is the cable modem dumb, or does it have its own ip address static or
automatically obtained from the isp.

What device is expected to hold the ip address assigned by the isp?

How many devices in the pc are supposed to have ip addresses, a network
card, perhaps a pseudo device created by the cable modem software ?

When the tech guy is talking about the dhcp server, does he mean the
Internet Service Providers dhcp server or one on your own local network.

What device is getting the 169.254 address ? This is assigned when tcpip is
set to automatically obtain an ip address, it first looks for a dhcp server,
if it gets no response then it chooses a 169.254 at random and pings the
network to check that it doesn't already exist, if it does, it picks another
and so on........

It would help if you could do a little block diagram like I did.

Do you have Update 818043 applied to your system, check in control panel/add
remove programs. This used to cause problems with cable modems.

Just a thought, do you have any firewall software or have you enabled the
built in firewall, I was wondering if this was stopping you picking up the
ip address. Whatever deivce is getting the 169.254 address, it clearly can't
see the dhcp server.

Another potential issue perhaps, is if you origininally had the router
plugged into the cable modem. Perhaps the provider keeps track of the MAC
addresses of devices connected to it, or a table of mac addresses is
maintained in the cable modem. Have you tried turning the cable modem off.

Powerup should always be cable modem first, wait until the correct lights
are lit and then power on the pc. If the pc comes up before the cable modem
has established a connection it wont get its address.

Could also be a cable issue. Are the correct lights lit on the cable modem.
I know if you cable from a network card to a hub its a straight thru cable
and if its from a network card to a router its a cross over cable. Not sure
about cable modems, and we haven't yet established if the modem is connected
to a usb or a network card.

Whats going on here :) ???

Are you runing a batchfile of some sort ?

Go to a command prompt, you do this by:-

Click on the start button, click on run

Type in cmd

Hit return

You should now be at a command prompt

If you want, you can get to a command prompt by clicking "start button"
then "all programs" then "accessories" then "comand prompt", the way I gave
is just another way, sorry if I confused you.

When you're at the command prompt the command to run is

ipconfig/all > jo1.txt

It looks like you have a period (.) where a greater than sign (>) should
be, this redirects output of the command to a file (jo1.txt) instead of to
the screen. Perhaps a problem with the shift key ?

Make sure ipconfig/all works from the command prompt before you redirect it
to a file.

Just try

ipconfig/all

first.

I notice at the the bottom systeminfo > jo2.txt seems to have run without an
error, but you didn;t post the output.

All this shows is 1 network card in your pc, which is picking up its ip
address of 192.168.1.43 from a local dhcp server on the same subnet with
address 192.168.1.1

This implies its connected to the local network. So what device is supposed
to be connected to the cable modem.

Is there another network device in the pc, which connects to the cable
modem, if so what ?
A usb port or a second network card?

You're just not giving me enough information

Hi Joanne,

Can you run an ipconfig/all

on the pc from a command prompt and post the output.

start/run
cmd

ipconfig/all > jo1.txt

If you have windows xp professional get a systeminfo
output aswell

systeminfo > jo2.txt

Then open jo1.txt with notepad and copy/paste the
contents into a reply
post.
Do same if jo2.txt exists.

How is the pc connected to the cable modem, is it via a
usb port or from a
nework card.

Is the cable modem dumb, or does it have its own ip
address static or
automatically obtained from the isp.

What device is expected to hold the ip address assigned
by the isp?

How many devices in the pc are supposed to have ip
addresses, a network
card, perhaps a pseudo device created by the cable modem
software ?

When the tech guy is talking about the dhcp server, does
he mean the
Internet Service Providers dhcp server or one on your
own local network.

What device is getting the 169.254 address ? This is
assigned when tcpip is
set to automatically obtain an ip address, it first
looks for a dhcp server,
if it gets no response then it chooses a 169.254 at
random and pings the
network to check that it doesn't already exist, if it
does, it picks another
and so on........

It would help if you could do a little block diagram
like I did.

Do you have Update 818043 applied to your system, check
in control panel/add
remove programs. This used to cause problems with cable
modems.

Paul

Don't worry about explaining the issue with your
router,
and just tell them you have your PC directly connected
to
your Cable Modem, and that your getting a "169.254.x.x"
IP address. You are setup on a dynamic IP address,
which
means you get your IP address from a DHCP server.
.server.

Just let them them know that you get the following
error
when you try and "repair" your Local Area Connnection
(renew IP Address):
"Repair Operation Failed. Renewing IP. Unable To
Repair.
Failed Flushing the ARP cache"

Then when you try and reinstall TCP/IP, you get the
following error when attempting to execute the command
ipconfig/flushdns: "An internal error occurred. The
pipe
is being closed. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support
for help. Unable to query TCP/IP interface table"

DEAR PAUL:

Above is the tech's reply to your question.

Thanks again
Joanne Z

I'm not completely sure I understand the hardware
setup.

1. If you have a pc connecting directly to the
provider
via a cable modem,
then the pc gets the ip address from the provider.

pc ----------------> Cable Modem >>>>>>>>>ISP
68.118.238.9

2. If you have a router, then the router would
normally
obtain and hold the
ip address from the provider.
It would have a second address which was on the
internal
network in order to
communicate with the devices plugged into it. It
ROUTES
ip traffice from the
internal 192.168 network out onto the isp network
subnet
of which
68.118.238.9 is a member.

pc---------------------------------Router
ISP

192.168.0.7 192.168.0.2
68.118.238.9

If you are in situation 1 the pc is in effect
connected
directly to the isp.
It should be picking up dns info and default gateway
info from the isp.
You should see this if you run the command

ipconfig/all

However in situation 2, the router obtains and holds
the
isp gateway and dns
information and the ip address supplied. It should
have
a second address on
the same subnet as the local network in order to route
traffic from the
local subnet to the isp.
In this situation, the pc should be set up with an
internal ip address and
its gateway address should be set to the local address
on the router.

If you just unplug and plug cables to get from
situation
1 to 2, to start
with, the pc and the router will both have the same
external ip address of
68.118.238.9, unless the ISP uses a random allocation
of
ip addresses. Even
in this situation, the pc will still have the old
address of 68.118.238.9
and its gateway will still be set to whatever the isp
allocated, this will
no longer work, since the pc is connected to an
intenal
subnet router port,
and requires an ip address on that same subnet.

A further complication will be as to how the pc gets
its
internal 192.168
address and gateway info, either through dhcp or
manually set. The router
internal 192.168 address needs to be set manually,
this
cannot be
dynamically allocated as it always needs to be the
same.

The router if its smart enough may have a dhcp
facitlity, if so, you have to
be careful that if its turned on, it doesn't conflict
with an existing dhcp
server. If you have internet connection sharing
enabled
on any pc, then it
will also act as a dhcp server and you could get a
conflitct, as there is no
facility to set dhcp scopes in ics.

Paul

T

Have you manually configured any static routes on it.
Is it set up to use OSPF or RIP ?
How does it get its ip address, is it configured on
the
router, or does it
use dhcp ?
How does the customers pc get its ip address, is it
static or from a dhcp
server ?
Does the router have the ability to act as a DHCP
server, and if so, is
there a potential dhcp server conflict ?

Whats the make and model ? I really need to see a
manual
for it.

Hi Joanne,

Can you run an ipconfig/all

on the pc from a command prompt and post the output.

start/run
cmd

ipconfig/all > jo1.txt

If you have windows xp professional get a systeminfo
output aswell

systeminfo > jo2.txt

Then open jo1.txt with notepad and copy/paste the
contents into a reply
post.
Do same if jo2.txt exists.

How is the pc connected to the cable modem, is it
via
a
usb port or from a
nework card.

This used to cause problems with cable
modems.

Don't worry about explaining the issue with your
router,
and just tell them you have your PC directly connected
to
your Cable Modem, and that your getting a "169.254.x.x"
IP address. You are setup on a dynamic IP address,
which
means you get your IP address from a DHCP server.
.server.

Just let them them know that you get the following
error
when you try and "repair" your Local Area Connnection
(renew IP Address):
"Repair Operation Failed. Renewing IP. Unable To
Repair.
Failed Flushing the ARP cache"

Then when you try and reinstall TCP/IP, you get the
following error when attempting to execute the command
ipconfig/flushdns: "An internal error occurred. The
pipe
is being closed. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support
for help. Unable to query TCP/IP interface table"

DEAR PAUL:

Above is the tech's reply to your question.

Thanks again

I'm not completely sure I understand the hardware
setup.

1. If you have a pc connecting directly to the
provider
via a cable modem,
then the pc gets the ip address from the provider.

pc ----------------> Cable Modem >>>>>>>>>ISP
68.118.238.9

2. If you have a router, then the router would
normally
obtain and hold the
ip address from the provider.
It would have a second address which was on the
internal
network in order to
communicate with the devices plugged into it. It
ROUTES
ip traffice from the
internal 192.168 network out onto the isp network
subnet
of which
68.118.238.9 is a member.

pc---------------------------------Router
ISP

192.168.0.7 192.168.0.2
68.118.238.9

If you are in situation 1 the pc is in effect
connected
directly to the isp.
It should be picking up dns info and default gateway
info from the isp.
You should see this if you run the command

ipconfig/all

However in situation 2, the router obtains and holds
the
isp gateway and dns
information and the ip address supplied. It should
have
a second address on
the same subnet as the local network in order to route
traffic from the
local subnet to the isp.
In this situation, the pc should be set up with an
internal ip address and
its gateway address should be set to the local address
on the router.

If you just unplug and plug cables to get from
situation
1 to 2, to start
with, the pc and the router will both have the same
external ip address of
68.118.238.9, unless the ISP uses a random allocation
of
ip addresses. Even
in this situation, the pc will still have the old
address of 68.118.238.9
and its gateway will still be set to whatever
the
isp
allocated, this will
no longer work, since the pc is connected to an
intenal
subnet router port,
and requires an ip address on that same subnet.

A further complication will be as to how the pc gets
its
internal 192.168
address and gateway info, either through dhcp or
manually set. The router
internal 192.168 address needs to be set manually,
this
cannot be
dynamically allocated as it always needs to be the
same.

The router if its smart enough may have a dhcp
facitlity, if so, you have to
be careful that if its turned on, it doesn't conflict
with an existing dhcp
server. If you have internet connection sharing
enabled
on any pc, then it
will also act as a dhcp server and you could get a
conflitct, as there is no
facility to set dhcp scopes in ics.

T

Have you manually configured any static routes
on
it.
Is it set up to use OSPF or RIP ?
How does it get its ip address, is it configured on
the
router, or does it
use dhcp ?
How does the customers pc get its ip address, is it
static or from a dhcp
server ?
Does the router have the ability to act as a DHCP
server, and if so, is
there a potential dhcp server conflict ?

Whats the make and model ? I really need to see a
manual
for it.

68.118.238.9, and she was online. We connected

Disconnected Router again, to see if router was

Any suggestions to solve this.
