unable to change password in incoming connections window

I am unable to change the password in the incoming connections window on a XP home computer. I am tring to use a VPN connection to connect to this machine, is this even possible ? I can get a log in window but it won't accept my username or password .I try to change the password on the XP incoming connections window but when I close it and return it has not changed. Please help me I am lost.

Password changes must be done on the local machine (if not part of a domain) or while logged directly into the network (ie. at the office). Additionally, the user must log off completely (from either the machine or the network) BEFORE attempting to login with the new password remotely. This is a built-in security feature of the operating system
