Unable to browse workgroup! Help me Obiwan...

Guest

I can ping all machines on the network, I can access them by name, but no
matter what I do I can't browse the workgroup, and this is really annoying
when trying to setup a new network with a new business! All machines running
XP Home, service pack 2- brand new machines. I uninstalled all the internet
security software, thinking this may have been interfering with access, but
it hasn't made a difference. Firewalls on or off makes no difference... Guest
accounts ON, File & Printer sharing ON... all members of the same workgroup,
connected via switch and ADSL modem router. If there's anything else I
haven't already tried that could help- PLEASE email me. I've been on the
phone to DELL for a couple of hours, tried calling M$, they wanted to charge
me... and it's all getting a bit much. please email me andrew [at]
boathouserestaurant.com.au Thank you!!

Andrew,

Requests for help in the newsgroup are generally best answered in the newsgroup.

Check for a browser conflict on the LAN.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win95/w95brows.mspx>

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous, on all the
computers.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

Some excellent references and you may be absolutely right but I have a
sneaking suspicion he may a device conflict between the ADSL router and the
switch - depending on what kind of switch he's using. He can ping - meaning
he has connectivity but can't browse which can be a lot of things. Which
device is doing the address assignments?

I've sent him an email since I have a soft spot for Aussies and the fact
that they helped save my butt once - way back when....

Chuck i have a very similar sounding problem,
have a netgear WGT 624 v2 router access point and 2 pcs running XP SP2.
When put in to the wired LAN ports all is well.

However if connect one machine wirelessly via the AP

The wireless pc can connect to the internet & ping the other pc by both ip
address & name, but can not find the mshome workgroup or share files but the
LAN machine can only ping the wireless by IP address not by name and can see
it on mshome but not access it.

I have tried using a laptop to access wirelessly via the AP and it is
exactly the same, it is as if the AP is not bridged to the LAN switch on the
router is but netgear denied this was possible & sent me a replacement which
is exactly the same or maybe some sort of DNS issue, but wether this is a MS
or Netgear problem seems to be a mystery.

so i put browstat on the machines and the wireless machine claims that
browing not active on the domain, but gets the master browser correct. I
looked at the registry but can't find the key you refer to.

Any ideas what to do next

Andy,

Start by providing ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

<SNIP>

Andy,

You're running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6, on both computers. Do you need
access to IPV6 addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

After you un install IPV6, reboot and rerun IPConfig, and post updated ones
here.

<SNIP>

Andy,

Kewl, you have an nVIDIA nForce MCP. That's an Ethernet NIC with an integrated
firewall. I'm not sure how complex it is - the nVIDIA website lists 5 NForce
models, but I'll bet it's at least a part of your problem.

Let's see what other problems you have.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Ok here goes, i have included the other machine on the LAN segment gemini,
which is rarely switched on but it suddenly occured to me that it may be
important.

ok hope this all makes things clear

Andy,

Good job including Gemini in the diagnostics. Looking at all 3 CDiags, I see
one symptom - neither Atlas nor Gemini can resolve the address of Backup. No
other problems with Backup - both Atlas and Gemini can ping, and net view,
Backup by ip address. All other tests are successful.

Looking at the IPConfigs for Atlas and Backup, Atlas is Node Type = Unknown, and
Backup is Mixed. These are compatible, so no problem there.

In cases like this, the first thing you look for is a misbehaving firewall on
Backup. What AntiVirus program is running there?

Maybe an LSP/Winsock problem on Backup. DNS / name resolution is affected by
the LSP / Winsock subsystem.

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

If no ideas yet, let's look at browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, Open
c:\browstat.txt, copy and paste into your next post.

Andy,

The "error = 5" is typical of a Guest authentication, as in XP Home, or in XP
Pro using Guest for authentication. I don't know the situation with Gemini, but
we'll explore that soon.

all machines have the guest account set up and enabled, is it possible to
clear atlas's master status & rebid? may be that would help?

Andy

Andy,

Which computer did you rebuild from scratch before trying all again?

Neither Atlas nor Gemini appear to have a problem. I'm pretty sure that the
problem is in Backup. Look at the CDiags for Atlas and Gemini, no problems
there.

The "error = 5" in the browstat for Backup and for Gemini are simply evidence
that you were had non-administrative access to Atlas (browstat examines the
registry of the master browser - and you can't have networked registry access
without administrative access) when you ran the browstats. This is a normal
result when you have either XP Home, or XP Pro with Guest authentication (XP Pro
with Simple File Sharing enabled, or with "Guest only" network access).

The "error = 5" is not the sole cause of the browsing problem. I've helped
various folks here who use Guest authentication, who have perfectly functioning
browsers.

You might see a change if you force the master browser functionality to Backup,
or to Gemini. There are two ways to do this:
1) Temporary: Power all 3 computers off. Power the computer that you want to
be the master browser on first, wait a few minutes, then power the others on.
The computer powered on first should elect itself the master browser, and the
other two powered on afterwards should accept and support that election.
2) Permanent: Stop and Disable the Browser Service on two computers. If only
one computer is running the Browser Service, it will permanently become the
master browser. Then power all 3 computers off, and then power all 3 back on
again.

I'd keep an open mind though. If there's a problem with Backup, I'm skeptical
that changing the master browser will fix all your problems.

If you want to know more about the browser, and what may or may not be the
problem, this is the most comprehensive article that I know of:

Chuck, i rebuilt backup, but now it just gets more & more weird.Courtesy of
techie friend Axel, i realised asus mboard can be wireless so disconnected
from LAN and accessed AP via wireless and it responded the same as backup ie
no browsing on domain, master is atlas, no dns resolution all the problems
previously associated with backup.

so i turned atlas off and then both gemini & backup just set themselves as
master browser for themselves & ignored each other.

so i turned atlas on & all 3 machines ignored eachother. finally i rebooted
backup & it found atlas & return to normal state of no browsing on domain &
after a reboot so did gemini.

finally i renable gemini's LAN port & she is back connected & happy and
talking to altlas.

anyway I am now about to turn gemini into an AP & use ICS to the router,
will update you as to if this works out later.

yours utterly confused

Andy,

Anything you find out may be useful information that could help others. The
browser subsystem is a charming kludge, and quite a challenge to diagnose
sometimes. I'm going to reread your above report when I am more awake and see
what else you might want to try.

Chuck more fun and games. forget the asus access point just another world of
pain.

so i turned of the browser service in Atlas & Backup merrily took back
control of it's own fate & selected itself as master browser.

but poor gemini just keeps looking for Atlas, saying "browsing not active on
domain" & "Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus"

meanwhile gemini & atlas can still ping eachother, but backup remains unknown

enjoy the zzzs, Cheers

Andy,

Having made several changes, you now have new and exciting problems / symptoms.

I think at this time it's best to stop cluttering up the forum with these
details and try more direct contact. I can do either email or IM, I have both
MSN/Windows and Yahoo IM. It's your dime.
