Hello, I spent 2 hours on phone this a.m. with Microsoft.
I have a new dell computor in my office with windows xp
professional. I took the cd home, and put it on my
computor. Always gave a notice of so many days to
activate windows...expired, now I have no access at all
on my home computor. Now I know I can't use the same cd.
So, I bought a new windowsxpprofessional at Office Depot,
and it will not load on my home computor.
I need instructions on how to un-install the first cd off
my home computor...I can't even get into my home computor
at all, since windows is shut down..I used to have
windows 98 plus. a real dilema, as I need access on both
computors... a service tech said I needed to get another
cd from Dell for the windowsxpprofessional to install at
home site. HELP! THANKS BEVERLY WARD RE/MAX (281)599-6567

Very bad idea putting your phone number on a public newsgroup site.

Boot into safe mode and run the activation replaceing the old CD key with
the new one.

Hi, Beverly.

You clearly found out too late that you can't use the XP CD on more than one
machine. That said - can you get into Setup (BIOS)? (Start the computer,
pressing F8). If so...

Disconnect all peripherals - printer, scanner etc - and remove any disc in
the CD-RW drive.

In Setup set the boot sequence too run from the CD. Insert the new XP CD
into the ROM drive and boot up.

The rest is quite lengthy so I suggest you find a way (your office should
do!) to visit

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

and print off his instructions.

After installing Windows XP, visit the websites of your hardware
manufacturers and download their Windows XP compatible drivers. Don't forget
graphics card and audio drivers.

Good luck.

I doubt if that is going to work to change the key of an OEM (Dell) copy
to a retail key from a different series.

It ought though to be possible to run a repair reinstall - Set the BIOS
to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the new XP CD, start Setup (do
not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take
'Repair Installation'.

If it does not, it will be necessary there to take New Install and when
it asks where hit ESC to allow selection of the present partition,
delete it and create a new RAW one to use. that of course will lose any
data present on the system. But the Safe mode boot first would at
least allow that to be backed up
