Ultra 133 IDE Card; Drivers transpose Disk numbers in XP (Win98 ok on same PC)

Hmmm.. Short or long... If I make it long, will be typing forever.
Short and I'll have to leave some stuff out till someone asks. Gotta
go short this time as there is no way to be sure of not leaving
something out anyway. Will try to start with just lists to condense:

Problem:

Drivers for New Ultra 133 Cards (tried two different ones...a Belkin
and an Adaptec) transpose Disk Numbers for 3 Hard Disks.

Partition Letters are correct, but Disk Numbers are assigned wrong and
listed that way in Partition Magic (version 7.01) and Drive Image
2002.

Abbreviated Example of what seen in PM: Disk 1(Drive G)
Disk 2(Drives H, I)
Disk 0(Drives C,D,E,F)

Now before anyone says its Partiton Magic's or drive Image's doing, I
am running a Dual Boot with Windows 98, and using the exact same
software instance, the Disks are numbered and shown correctly in both
when viewed from within Windows 98. Only when in XP are the numbers
wrong.

Exact time it occurs:

After the driver installation, all is still normal, but once XP is
rebooted, the disk numbers are switched. Can duplicate it every time.

More info:

I have an older Promise Ultra 133 card (badged as Maxtor) that works
just fine and does not disturb any part of the configuration. Only
reason I decided to try a new card was that I was getting occasional
disappearing devices on one channel, and have just about ruled out the
Hard Drive, Cable, and Power Connector, so it seemed time to swap out
the card and see what would happeb.

Also figured it wouldn;t hurt to have a spare card, and now I am
DETERMINED to get a spare one even if I don;t experience a missing
device again anytime soon. Cause apparently replacing it with a
trouble-free succesor is going to be tougher than planned.

I have put the old card back in and restored all suspect drives from
backups, so I'm back where I started from a few days ago, but still
looking to install a new card, or at least find an brand new unit of
my existing one to have on hand (so I can avoid the hassle of bogus
disk numbers.

Any ideas/input appreciated.

Thank you. That IS the exact same card, and in next few days if I
can't find a new one in a physical store I will probably go ahead and
order it. I do mu share of internet purchasing, but usually prefer
walk-in stores in case an item is either defective or not what I
expected. Also live in a condo and delivery is more dicey than for a
house.

Also... am really interested in finding out how or why Windows XP
reacts to the Belkin and Adaptec Cards the way it does. I'd still like
to solve the mystery.

But it does ease my mind to know I can get my identical spare card
afterall, which I may decide to do even IF I can solve the mystery. I
didn't like the BIOS display of the newer cards as much anyway.
