U.S. switching to Digital Broadcast 2009

Been reading where the US will require US broadcasters to switch to digital
signals in 2009. Brings a question to mind. Will my ATI AIW 9800 Pro be
obsolete come 2009? If so, I'm really going to be PO'ed 'cause I bought the
card this past summer. Haven't been able to find a straight answer
anywhere, so I thought I would ask here. Thanks for any replies.

It won't be obsolete but you'll need an adapter to use it after the cutoff
date.
By 2009, though, you really should be replacing your computer and the video
card in it.

It will happen or not depending on the mood of the populace at the time--if
enough people are going to be sufficiently annoyed by analog broadcast
going black that it will lead to legislators failing of re-election then it
won't happen.

If it does happen though your AIW will need to be connected to an external
tuner.

This applies only to over the air broadcast, by the way, not to cable or
satellite.

Since our cable company is going digital too, we'll still have to get the
converter.
Right now, the cable plugs right into the AIW card.

My cable has "gone digital" for a couple of years now .. and I still receive
my analog signals. Did they actually SAY that they would discontinue analog
service?

I just read about a week ago that all U.S. stations must convert to
digital only by 2010, maybe another web site says 2009 but I read
2010.

Huh? I thought that this was supposed to happen in 2007. Did they decide
to extend the change over?

We need to get the show on the road. We have been stuck in low resolution
since the 50s for crying out loud. Time to move up a notch or two. This is
way overdue.

The current goal for completion of the transition is December 2006.

From one of the links the other guy posted.

"Americans have a lot of work to do to meet their 2009 date, as only
2% of households have digital TV equipment."

I see you can get TV's now that have both analog and digital tuners.

That is a bill before Congress, not a law. It may be amended in any number
of ways before the House and Senate come to agreement and put it to a full
vote.

Currently the FCC is stating December 2006.

For the full text of the bill go to <http://thomas.loc.gov> and search on
"analog spectrum recovery".
