Typing over highlighted text and backspace problem

This problem appeared out of nowhere... I have tried
everything (even reinstalling the program) to fix it and
nothing has worked. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Whenever I highlight a word and try to type over it, the
word is not erased and the cursor simply types the new
text before the old text. Also, when I highlight a word
and press "backspace" the word does not delete (but when
I press "delete" the word does delete).

Note, when I refer to "highlighting" text, I am referring
to marking it with the mouse, not to marking it with the
highlighter function.

Tools, Options, Edit tab and check Typing Replaces Selection box.
