two webs, wrong shared borders

B

Brian Quigley

I've got two separate webs in my Mywebs folder. Often,
when I open one, it comes up with the shared border of
the other. It seems to get it from the Myweb borders
folder instead of its own borders folder. How can I
ensure that each web gets its shared border from its own
borders folder and not from the Myweb borders folder?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Each web must be a separate subwebs.

Thanks, Thomas, but I don't want a sub-web, as they will
be entirely separate URLs for entirely different
purposes. Can't they be kept entirely separate?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

A subweb is what will keep your content separate and allow you to have
separate shared border and navigation.

I don't use shared borders or themes, but here is an example of different
domains all under the same hosting account, each in it own subweb:

http://www.ycoln.net (root web)
http://www.WARNorg.com (subweb)
http://www.DiabeticNet.com (subweb)

My understanding is that sub-webs require FrontPage
Server Extensions, which my ISP server does not have.
Why doesn't a FP2002 web get its shared border from its
own border folder rather than the Mywebs border folder??

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Brian,

Ok, you can only have subwebs when you have the FP extensions.

Share Borders, Themes and Navigation are applied on site wide basis, you can
only have one set assigned to your web, and since the domains are all under
the root web, the content is applied to all pages unless you select
individual page and disable it's Share Borders or Theme they will be
applied.

Locally when you open a FP web and apply shared borders or themes, FP will
create the required hidden folders in the root of the web. To see these
hidden folder, go to Tools | Web Settings | Advanced tab and enable viewing
of hidden directories. Since you are uploading to server that doesn't have
the FP extensions, make sure the hidden _border and _themes folders are also
uploaded.

Thanks, Thomas, for the detailed reply and for your
patience. I've already published my first personal web
(http://sunshinecoast.platypus.net.au)and am now doing
one for my local sports club, but need to keep it
entirely separate. I also want to take their web on a
floppy disk to show the committee for their approval
before publishing. I'll keep trying, but if I can't do
it, I'll have to switch to Dreamweaver.

Thomas A. Rowe

Brian,

Since the server doesn't have the FP extensions, you do the following which
should work, but is a few extra steps:

Locally make sure you have each web in a subweb, so that they are completely
independent of each other.

Then publish each web to individual folders on your desktop or somewhere on
your HD, then open each folder in Windows Explorer and delete all _vti
folders.

Next using a 3rd Party FTP application upload the content of each folder to
the remote server.
Place the content for sunshinecost in the root of your web space and place
the sport club content into it own folder.

DO NOT USE FP to publish from here on.

If your webs are at My Webs, then are Not using a local host server (and FP SE locally)
- you don't open your webs using File Open Web http://localhost/ or http://machinename/

So You don't need subwebs at all locally
- just use your disc based webs which can be anywhere (not just in the My Webs folder)

In fact FP is happier if you create them All as root level webs at the top of your drive
- will prevent most broken links pointing to "files" instead of relative urls

In Windows Explorer Create two folders (w/o spaces in folder names)
Say: C:\wwwSunshine and C:\wwwwLocalClub
Open your current web at C:\My Webs and use File Publish (ALL) and browse to C:\wwwSunshine
(you can then delete the old web at C:\My Webs)
Then to create your new web use either File Open web and browse to C:\wwwwLocalClub
(FP will convert the folder to a web)
Or File New web and enter C:\wwwwLocalClub as the location

Many thanks. That sounds like the solution I was looking
for.
