Two problems with IE6

Over the past week or so I have had two irritating problems with IE6. I am
reporting them together in case they are linked in some way. I am using
Window 2000 Professional.

The first (and most serious) is that when I get a list of possible links
(like after a Google search) then clicking on about 1/4 of them results in
IE6 closing immediately with no error message. If I try to repeat the same
links give the same problem and a previously OK link continues to give no
problem. There seems to be no problem with the sites or pages themselves as
I have reached several of them by different routes.

The second problem is that I keep getting messages saying I am trying to
download the file SHDOCVW.DLL. This looks just like the message you get
when you ask for a download (Open, Save etc) but the file is from my own
machine (ie it says download from C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32). Why does it want to
download a file from my own machine (it is there I checked)? I normally just
cancel but I went ahead partially once and it gives the normal option of
downloading to my default download directory. I can't see that this would
do anything useful or stop it making the request in future.

I have run up-to-date virus checker and updated IE6 using windows update -
no effect.

I would appreciate any help
