two modems, two speeds

I was setting up two laptops, a new Gateway and an older Sony for a lady in our club.
Both laptops are using Windows XP SP2 Home Edition
Both laptops have a 56 K V92 win modem, and both modems test okay in the Control Panel Diagnostic
Test.
However, the Sony will only connect at 28.8 kbs while the Gateway connects at 49.8 kbs.
I was also using the same phone wire to test each computer.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix the Sony modem to connect a little faster.
I know it is not the phone line. I already downloaded and installed the latest driver for the
modem, but that had no impact.

The Sony has the older HD configuration where Sony partitioned a 15 Gig into a 5 Gig C drive and a
10 Gig D drive.
Of course the lady owning the computer had no idea she could install software or store files on the
D drive and bought the new Gateway when the Sony would no longer work due to a full C drive. I now
have deleted enough on the C drive for operation and, if the customer wants, I will get a copy of
Partition Magic and resize the C drive.

Richard,
You are in the wrong group you should post this in the Networking and the
Web group.
Also Open both Modems Properties and see the 1500Kb or 1600 I can't remember
now ( as I really struggle to write this post).
Also see the UART is enabled on that modem.
If you didn't get answer on the network I will dig and get the old modem
tomorrow and see the setting which I mean but I thought give you a hint.
HTH.

Hi Richard,
Try this:
Click Start >> Control panel >> Network and Internet Connections>> Internet
Options.
On the IE Properties click on Connections Tab then Highlight the Default
connection name and click Settings button.

On the Default Connection settings window under General Tab under this:
Connect using:
[ Modem Here ][v]
[ Configure...] click on Configure button
On the Modem Configuration Window click on General Tab and set this:
Maximum Speed:
[ 57600 ][v] you can change this settings to adjust accordingly.

Then click Connection tab:
Connection Preference:
Data Bits: [ 8 ][v]
Parity: [None][v]
Stop Bits: [1 ][v]
Then click on [ Port Settings..] button:
On Advanced Port settings;
[ √ ] Use FIFO buffer (requires 16550 Compatible UART) check this Box

Select Lower settings to correct connection problem....etc.

Receive Buffer Low (1) _____________â–¼_______ High (14)
Transmit Buffer Low(1) __________________â–¼__ High (16)
Click [OK] to confirm your changes.
Then back on the Connect Tab Settings click on Advanced Button:
On the Advanced Settings, check this;
[√ ] Use flow control
(*) Hardware (RTS/CTS)
( ) Software (XON/XOFF)

Try to adjust the setting one-by one to get better performance.
I will advise you to write down the Old settings before performing any
change to be a reference to you when you are doing your adjustment, I hope
you will not need it but just in case.
With the 1600 last night I meant the( PAUD)
HTH.
Let us know.
Regards,
nass
