two instances of outlook running under a single account

One of the PCs in my office, at times it shows two instances of outlook
running at the same time. The user has only one account. The second identical
outlook just pops up unexpectedly.
Is there any logical explanation for this?
It's WinXP Pro machine running microsoft outlook 2003.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.

What I have problem with is not shutting down of outlook. What happens is
that after outlook has been running for a while, another icon of same outlook
pops up at the taskbar. If I close it, it closes, but what I would like to
understand is why it behaves like that, and how to stop it.
