Two IE6 windows open after click on hyperlink from Outlook2002

I use Outlook 2002 as my email program and often start Internet Explorer 6
from within Outlook by clicking on a hyperlink in an email. However, two
windows open up: one blank and one to the correct link. When I open IE6
from the taskbar, independently of Outlook, the browser opens correctly (with
one window). I found the following post and tried the solutions suggested
to eliminate the blank window:

Sounds like your file type associations for certain URL protocols
may be bad. Try an IE Repair. (see MSKB 194177 or 831429)
If you're lucky this command might be sufficient:
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
Note: I suggest closing at least all IE and OE windows before doing
the regsvr32 commands. A full repair results in a reboot.

Specifically I tried: Start > Run > regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
which said it succeeded, then restarted my computer, and it didn't work.

I then looked at MSKB 194177, which gave me the IE6 repair function:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
I ran it and then rebooted my computer. Again, it didn't work and I still
get the extra blank window.

I also looked for MSKB 831429 and couldn't find it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem?
Thanks

Hi Don,

I tried CWShredder (which came up with nothing), and Ad-Aware SE (and
deleted all "critical" items it found). I also ran HijackThis, but did not
post a log to the forums, since my problem does not seem to qualify as a
hijacked browser (unless I've misunderstood what that means). I'm still
having the same problem. Any more thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi,
Have you checked for malware?

Try CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot and the other at programs named and
explained at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security
tips on that page.

Hi,
Here's 831429
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831429
Try that repair method.
This is Windows XP, right?

I would first try the repair method in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831429

Have you done a virus scan recently?

Are there any other programs running that would be interacting in some way
with Outlook?

Programs such as Ad-aware and Spybot don't catch everything. It might be
productive to post a HijackThis log. Try working through the preliminary
cleaning steps at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm then posting a log to
the forum at http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

Hi Don,

I finally figured out the problem after performing an internet explorer
repair and scanning for viruses, both of which did not do anything. I then
checked for interfering programs, as you suggested, and realized that my Road
Runner Medic program (from Time Warner Cable for diagnosing internet
connectivity problems), which started automatically on booting up the
computer, seemed to be the culprit (icon visible on taskbar, lower right of
screen). I exited the program and found that the problem went away. I then
rebooted the computer, and the problem came back. I then uninstalled Road
Runner Medic, rebooted the computer, and the problem stayed away.

I will inform Time Warner that their program interferes in this way with
Outlook. BTW, I couldn't figure out how to keep it from automatically
starting up when the computer boots up.

Thanks so much for your patient help.

Does that diagnostic tool maintain a log anywhere?
Perhaps you can find out what it is complaining about there
even though the IE window (where presumably you would
normally find out such things) is empty. Another place
to look would be the Event Viewer Application log;
however if the window is blank it is just as likely that the
application which would be writing to it would be oblivious
of that fact, so then you might only see normal entries
in there (if any).

My guess would be that recent security restrictions may be
preventing the tool from using IE the way it was designed.
For that matter recent security restrictions may be the cause
of the "problem" being detected.

BTW does Task Manager show you an item for that blank window?
If so, right click on it and use its Go to Process command to find
out if it is in fact an IE window and not (e.g.) another program
using a browser control.
