two DNS servers, simple question

Hi
I support one site with 3 DC's and one member server
We currently have the DNS and DHCP running on one DC
I was just wondering if anyone can forward me to steps on how to setup the DNS and DHCP on another DC just in case one goes down....is this possible?

Thanks in advance for the reply

Here are the step-by-step instructions for doing this procedure:

1. Install DNS on the other DC.
2. Open the DNS console.
3. Click the local computer's name (if not already).
4. Click the Action menu, the click New Zone.
5a. Click Next.
5b. Click "Standard Secondary", then click Next.
5c. Make sure that "Forward Lookup Zone" is selected, then click Next.
5d. Click "Browse", double-click the DC with DNS already running, "Forward
Lookup Zones", the domain name.
5e. Type the IP address of the DC with DNS already running.
5f. Click Finish.
6. Enjoy!

Please let me know if this works/doesn't work.

Andrew gave you the steps, so hear are some pointers.

You have to make the other DNS server a "secondary"
for the zone, by "creating the same zone name" but specifying
secondary and to pull from the existing DNS server, UNLESS....

The other DNS server is a DC. In this case you can use the
method above (secondary) or you can make (them both) AD
integrated.

For DHCP, be really careful with the addresses you give out:
Don't give out the same address from two DHCP servers (they
don't coordinate with each other.)

You really should create the SAME scope for each subnet on
both DHCP servers, but then EXCLUDE a portion from each
so that neither hands out the others address.
(There's a sneaky technical reason for doing it this way rather
than non-overlapping scopes.)

Your very welcome!

Well, DHCP Help says that you should design using the "80/20" rule, meaning,
one server should distribute 80% of the IPs, and the other server should
distribute 20%.

You may just want to read the help file, just go into your DHCP console, and
then click the '?' on the toolbar.

Hi,

Thought I'd share a couple links on the 80-20 Rule:
