Two different versions of Word on same machine?

I currently have Office 2003 installed on my laptop. I use ACT! 6.0 contact
manager for business contacts and mailings. My version of ACT only works with
Word 2k and lower.

My question is how can I install Word 2k on my laptop only for ACT and still
use Word 2003 as my default. I still want Word 2003 to remain as the default
Office word processor.

Thanks!

Don't try it. It's technically possible, but causes endless anguish. There
are so many settings that trip over each other. ACT! is a stunningly
incompetent piece of software in this respect. Write rude letters, then bite
the bullet and upgrade it.

I have maintained as many as 4 different versions of Word on my computer at
the same time -- without problems. Usually, I just leave the earlier
versions in place when I install a new version. In your case (a situation
I've been in many times), I would simply install Word 2000. The next time
you run Word 2003, it might want to refresh some files -- let it. After this
"negotiation", both copies of Word should run fine.

Why not upgrade to Act!2005? As Jezebel says, the potential for disaster far
outweighs the cost of the upgrade.

Herb, it's not as simple as that for these purposes. When you ask ACT! to
use Word, it checks what version you have installed. If the 'registered'
version is earlier than 97 or later than 2000 (ie 2003 if the user wants
that as the default version), ACT! tells you Word isn't installed at all.
It's not smart enough to go searching to see if you have *another* version
of Word on the machine.
