two copies of windows on same partition

I***I am a newbie***

After bringing my computer to Best Buy (Big Mistake) for some hardware
installation and "clean-up"), there is now two copies of Windows XP in my c:
drive, I have done some research here, and it seems I have to delete one of
the copies from the boot.ini. path. Which copy should I delete, the newer
install or older one? Also recently whenever I turn on my computer a prompt
says I need to restart, upon doing so the same prompt comes up again and
again. Now, I just click no. I am not sure if is this related to the dual os
problem or not. I am not sure if this is relevenat or not but we had a power
failure last night and my computer was on. Please help. Thank you

you really should direct
the question to the techs
that worked on the pc.

sometimes, simply installing
a proven and functional o.s.
helps them diagnose hardware
issues. but they should have
either uninstall their version
or advised you that your original
o.s. is dysfunctional or whatever.

--------------------

however, what might be
helpful is to test each o.s.
for its functionality.

sometimes the boot menu
lines are identical and are
confusing as to which one
boots which o.s.

so i might suggest to modify the
wording that appears on
the boot menu.

go to system control panel,
advance and startup/recovery.

the first section pertains to
the menu so click on edit.

the boot menu file will open
in notepad.

inside the "parens" you might
want to modify the words
Windows XP with something
like WIN XP-a

then save, exit and reboot.

now boot into each o.s. and
take it for a test spin and see
which one works or does not.

if they both work and your
original is in tact, then you
might consider uninstalling
the other "or" leave it as
a back up o.s. in case of
emergencies.

if you decide to keep a
backup, then edit the boot
menu and maybe change
the line to "backup o.s"
or something to that affect.

something to keep in mind
is that you can remove the
line in the boot menu referencing
the unwanted o.s..

however, the o.s. and all its
files are still on the harddisk,
so you will have to uninstall
it.

--------------------

again, you should complain
the to techs or the service manager
as they may try to nickel and dime
you for a return visit.

but before you do, test each
o.s. as mentioned above so that
you will be more attuned to the
situation at hand and then gain
a better idea of what to get
the techs to do or not, that is
if you decide to take it back.
