TV: ATIMMC.exe application error--problem reinstalling/setting up TV

J

Jeff Lawrie

I have a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (about 3 yrs old). For some reason
I couldn't figure out, the volume control stopped working on the TV.
Also I have always gotten the application error when closing the TV
app, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall.

I uninstalled ATI and the Win2000 driver.

Using the original CD, I reinstalled the ATI MMC. Everything seemed
normal. After restart, I opened the TV app and got the TV setup set
of screens (scan for channels, pick a password, etc.) After this the
TV app. opened.

Here's where the trouble starts. If I'd change the channel or try to
open setup, I'd get the following error: TV: ATI MMC.exe application
error....instruction 0x00000041 reference memory @ 0x00000041 memory
could not be read. I'd click OK and the app would close. When I went
back to open it, I'd be back to the TV App setup again and it'd start
all over again.

Next I went to the ATI web site and downloaded DirectX9, WME9, and mmc
8-0-0-0.exe. I installed all. Now when I try to open TV, I get this
error message (TV setup never comes up now): CSettingNotifier:
ATIMMC.exe - Application Error The instruction at 0x0106d47a
referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.

Is mmc8-0-0-0.exe all I need to install? When I did that (after I
uninstalled all things ATI) I got no ATI icons to start programs.

I've confused myself and anyone reading this, I'm sure.

I'd like to figure out what I need to do to get the TV app back and
working.

Step by step procedure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jl

- and these are part of the display driver, not MMC (confusing though that
is!!)

So you need to go here http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html
follow the 2K links for your operating system and get ALL software from both
Multimedia Centre and Graphic driver links.

Follow the step by step procedures that ATI has already included with these
downloads. (?)

Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm able to record just fine about 50% of the time--in fact it seems
like I only run into issues if I record more than one show in a day.
When I try to do this, I usually find the second show has strange
vertical lines in the recording and the GPU recover app has launched.
It's almost like there's a memory leak or something that causes the
MMC application to crater after it's been running for a while.

I've reinstalled everything from scratch using the latest drivers off
ATI's site, but the problem still persists.

Help?

Haven't had a vertical lines problem, but definitely have suspected a memory
leak in the past. I certainly had one period when recording TV and then
playing an mpeg would reliably cause a lockup unless I rebooted in between.
That would have been Cat 3.7 MMC8.1 - at the moment, on Cat 3.10 MMC 8.8 it
is not happening but I have learned to reboot often to avoid it.
Many would blame my OS, W98SE, rather than MMC, but the fact is that it has
been the only app. to cause a total lockup for a long time now.

If you think its a memory leak then shouldn't cacheman
http://www.outertech.com/ catch it, or confirm it one way or another?

Right - you still have problems on MMC8.8 Cat 3.10, I'm OK at present, I'm
running Cacheman - give it a try?

Thanks. I'll give that a shot and you know if I find anything.
Great card...when it works. I'm still wishing tivo was available in
Canada at this point though. :)

I don't think you can install one version of mmc over another and
expect it to work. There may a few exceptions but in general it won't
work.

To get rid of the old version you need to get Drive Cleaner from
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/. Remove as much as you can from
the uninstall application then use this to get rid of the rest.

After you remove everything you can load up a new version.
