Turning on computer

When I turn my computer on, it goes to a mode where I have to press F1 to get
it to go to Windows. How do I correct that? Also, the computer turns itself
on during the night. How do I fix that?

If you have to press F1, this is not a Windows problem, it's hardware.

Most often, on desktop (not laptop) systems, it means that the CMOS battery
is failing. This is a part that costs under $5 and is easy to replace.

Power off, unplug the power cord, open the case. You'll see a battery that
looks like a nickel or quarter. Remove this battery (there is a clip), and
note the battery type (such as CR2032), go to a store and get another one.
Where I am, even drugstores carry these batteries.

Bring the new battery home, put it in in place of the old one, put the case
back together, plug it back in and turn it on.

You will have to press F1 one more time to allow the system BIOS to
re-detect hardware, and reset the date and time (you can do that once you
get into Windows).
Aside from that, your're done, and the problem should be over.

The computer may turn itself on if you have "Wake on LAN" or another
"Wake on" option selected in the BIOS. So enter the BIOS and see if any
of those options are on, turn them off.

Unplug it from the powerpoint - this will also help protect from
power surges especially if you live in an area of electrical storms.
