turning off safe mode

A

Andy F.

I have Win XP home ed and am in safe mode, trying to
remove a nasty virus and having no luck. it shuts down
any program I try to run to remove it- Norton Antivirus
(cannot run the Virus Scan) and any other steps I take to
remove it (updating the REG files, etc.) get shut down
before I can begin. Cannot even activate the Norton
software.
1. So any info or document that would help me is much
appreciated. I believe the virus is called Gaobot.gen.
2. Also cannot figure out how to get out of safe mode and
back to normal mode.

Many Thanks,
Andy F.

Hi Andy F:

To get out of Safe Mode:

Start\Run\msconfig\BOOT.INI\uncheck /SAFEBOOT

In msconfig look for a startup program named either:
Configuration Loader
SoundMan or
Service Host Process
and uncheck to remove from the startup list.... do this in safe mode.

Try to disable the virus in the Taskmanager or in the registry
in Start\Run\regedit.msc
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
