turning 8/1/06 into just Aug

I am keeping the date field but I wanted to add an billing period field since
in the future they may not be the exact same *the 8/1/06 bill might end up
still on July's record*.
There are thousands of entries so I don't want to go back and type it
by hand. I was thinking I could copy the dates into a new field and then
somehow I should be able to turn it into either Aug06 or 8/06 but it needs to
be seperate from the original date field.

Cearte a new textbox
Control source is =[YourDateField]
Format (of new field) is mmm/yy

You don't need a new field. In fact, you shouldn't store the same data in
multiple fields. On your form (or report) just add a text box bound to that
field, and set the format to mmm/yy or m/yy.
