so i can still turn it on to use on the train? the only idea i had was to
totally uninstall the trackpad driver. any suggestions please? thanks

Speak to the manufacturer of the laptop.
If it is new - they should (if possible) be able to help you.

Look in control panel for a separate icon for the touchpad. It may be
easier to find if you temporarily switch Control Panel's view to Classic.

Once you find that, open it and check out the available settings. If
"disable" isn't available, check for settings that make the mouse pad less
sensitive. There should be pressure settings and scroll options to
experiment with. Some will have a "ignore palms resting on pad" setting.

Turning the trackpad on and off has nothing to do with Windows XP. For
example, my HP laptop has a button to turn the trackpad on and off.

Look in the laptop's users manual for details.

Take a look at the documentation that came with your laptop; it
should be in there. (If not, call the folks who sold it to you.)

On my Acer laptop, it's Fn+F7 to turn trackpad on and off. If you
have a Fn key on your laptop I bet you'll find it's Fn plus some
other key.
