Turn off Task Pane (Pain)

Can ANYONE tell me if this is truly a true statement made by Microsoft
---------------
# How Can I Turn Off the Task Pane

The task pane cannot be turned off (disabled). You can hide the task pane when you do not need it. If you use a feature that requires the task pane, the task pane automatically reopens

To hide the task pane, do one of the following

* Click the Close button (the X in the upper-right corner of the task pane)

-or
* On the View menu, click Task Pane

The tool in the link turns off the *startup* task pane. Other functions
require the task pane which cannot be removed, so the statement you are
querying is correct. If you need the functions the task pane accesses, you
need to display the pane. Otherwise hide it.

My problem is the opposite, I can't get it to stay open when I ope
Word.

Is there a box I need to check somewhere that has the Taskpane ope
when Word is launched.

Thank

You can turn off the task pain in Word 2003 by going to Tools, Option, View, look under the title Show and unclick "Start Up Task Pane". This only affects the program you have open, not any other programs in MS Office.

The directions only turn off the task pane in the document you are working on and for the remainder of your session in Word. This does work permanently in Excel, but in Word when you relaunch the program it re-appears even if you have the box unchecked. There must be some way to turn it off
