You would be better off doing a clean installation of winxp, after having
backed up any data, and insured the backups are valid.
I assume also your hw supports winxp

Yes,it does. and I'm sorry..What do you mean about doing a clean
installation? I tried to install windows xp w/the cd, but was unable to,so i
copied it onto my desk top, and was able to get alot further, until the
install windows, and that's when i got the error message.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
internal components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically
designed for Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold
and run fine with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more
stringent hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of
many early models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or
HP's consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

When you load the XP install disk from inside Win98, the drop down on the
Install Type screen will give you a choice between New Install and Upgrade.
New Install is the way to go. Upgrade installs are only to be used as a
very last resort when you have no other choice.

But you have to verify that XP drivers are available for every single piece
of hardware in your computer, this includes all components of your
motherboard (typically things like sound, network, and modem can be harder
to find XP drivers for on old machines, and with some graphics cards, you
can only get basic support). Depending on the machine in question, this can
be somewhat of a headache to determine.
