I have Windows XP and Easy Cleaner installed. Yesterday I might have gotten
a bit carried away and used Easy Cleaner to delete some registry items. I
also worked on my startup items and deleted several of them. After this,
when I start up my computer, my MSN Messenger does not load in AND my Norton
has an X in it and says my computer may be at risk. Then, within a moment,
the X disappears and the Norton is fine. I can connect into Messenger
manually. Obviously, I am not happy with this. I have gone to Easy Cleaner
Restore but nothing seems to happen when I chose Undo All. I also have tried
going into the Start Up menu and putting back one by one the items I took
out and so far, that has not helped.
My restore point is a possibility but I did install a new printer on Dec
25th and the restore point is there. If I do this, I am concerned that I
have to do a reinstall on the printer which was a bit of a nuisance because
it is wireless.
Hope someone can give me some help here...

You used a third party product that messed up your system. Go to said third
party product manufacturers for support for the most part.

As for MSN/Windows Live messenger. Open it manually and change its
Settings/Options from within the application to have it open at Windows
Startup/Connection to the Internet, etc.

This is an example of using a tool that may/may not be harmless - but
without understandingf what the tool does - and it causing issues (albeit
minor ones. Even the Norton AV sounds like you have a slower computer with
few resources trying to load a resource hungry application at startupo while
everything else is going on...)

What's Easy Cleaner? A registry cleaner/optimiser? If so then I would get
rid of it. Most registry cleaners are nothing but snake oil. They make
promises that they cannot hold, they warn you about large numbers of
registry entries that "slow down/damage" your machine (none of which is
true) and if you're unlucky they cause permanent damage to your machine.

If this was my machine then I would bite the bullet:
1. Remove Easy Cleaner.
2. Use System Restore to go back to 25 December.
3. Re-install the printer.
4. Make notes of your printer installation process.
The last point is important: If installing this printer is difficult then
you MUST take notes. Sooner or later you will have to do it again. You don't
want to re-invent the wheel each time, do you?

Ok - will try this first...please explain how I manually change the settings
and options in Windows Live Messenger - I cannot quite figure out how to do
this.
Thanks.

Found the settings and they are all correct - nothing changed them at all
with all this fooling around so I cannot figure out why it does not start
up.

Select & use an available (System) Restore Point which *immediately*
predates the very first time you ran EasyCleaner. If you then must
reinstall the printer, so be it & learn from this lesson.

Think your Registry needs "cleaning" or "repairing"? Read
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions (as if
you need more convincing now).

Restore back to before the printer was installed because it will take less
time to re-install it than it will to work out what was removed and how to
put it all back.

After you have done this, uninstall Easy Cleaner, and take no notice of
anybody who says you should always cut stuff out of startup or services.
Unless you know what to remove and the consequences of so doing, you will
end up with a 'stuffed' computer

If you do have stuff in startup which you want to disable, use WinPatrol to
do it.. www.winpatrol.com

Use System Restore to restore to the point prior to your running Easy
Cleaner (and then later uninstall Easy Cleaner, and don't use it (or any
registry cleaner). It will end up being less work overall just restoring
it, even if you have to reinstall the printer.

Change the settings so they look like they are not set.
APPLY/OK your way out.
Return and change the settings so they look the way you want them.
APPLY/OK your way out.

I did the restore and did not have to do a reinstall in the printer BUT I
have another problem...
When I start up my computer, everything goes well for a few moments but then
Windows Live Messenger does not connect AND my Norton Corporate Edition
shows an X in it. A few moments later, the X disappears and I have to start
Messenger by hand as there is an X in that.
Now - all you smart people - what could be causing this?

But did you use System Restore to the day preceding ALL of these recent
problems, and not just some of them? (I am wondering if you went back far
enough)

I had not made any changes prior to that time...

I guess I'm confused, because I thought you said if you went back far enough
to be sure you'd have to reinstall the printer again(?).

IF you are sure you went back far enough (to the point at which all of these
problems appeared), then I'd probably reinstall Live Messenger (rebooting
after the install just to be sure), And then work on Norton next, if needbe
(and I don't know what Norton Corporate Edition is). But someone else here
might have a better idea.

Bill:

I have reconsidered your question - I did ALL the deletes AFTER 12/25
however I just want into my programs to again remove some of the unwanted
and unnecessary programs I had deleted and although 2 of them appear in
programs, they seem to be already deleted or partially deleted, so now I
think I am back at the beginning....
