Trying to share wireless connection.

K

Kardon Coupé

Dear All,

I'm running a latop with a wireless pcmcia card on it, connecting to a
wireless access point downstairs, and recently I have aquired a device for
an old 8 bit machine that can use an internet connection, when I connect the
device direct to my router with a cable, it works fine, so I know the cable
works, etc and the 8 bit software works. Now here is my dilema, I would like
to be able to get my latop share its incoming wireless internet connection,
I've tried a few things from activating sharing, but it warns me that it
will change the i.p address to 192.168.0.1, and when I say ok, it throws
back an error, and fails. When I've tried to use DCHP (as I manually assign
my ip's easier to manage) and try the same, it causes the Internet
Properties box to freeze up. I've tried use the "Bridge" option, but as I
don't know exactly what it does I can't seem to get it to work, it seems to
connect the 10mb Lan (Onboard Lan Port) to the bridge, but it makes my
Wireless connection disconnect? (Gasps for a breath) I'm thinking maybe the
IP addresses, GateWays and DNS Thingy, might have somat to do with it.
Should the Onboard LAN have the Gateway set to the Wireless PCMCIA?

I am wondering if it is possible, has anybody sucessfully done this? I'm
hoping someone will offer me an alternative.. =-)

(Router -->Wireless Access Point --> Laptop Wireless PCMCIA --> Laptop
Onboard LAN Port --> 8 Bit Machine)
Sorry to type it that way, but if it wasn't clear I thought the above may
help.

Regards.
Paul.

You shouldn't have to make any DHCP, gateway, DNS, or other TCP/IP
settings. Don't create a network bridge. Enabling Internet
Connection Sharing on the wireless network connection should be all
that's necessary.

What exactly happens when you try to enable ICS?

What does the error message say?

"When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set
up to use IP address 192.168.0.1.
Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If
there computers have static IP addesses,
You should set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure
you want to enable Internet Connection
Sharing?"

Then I press "Yes" and I get..

"An error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannon be enabled. A LAN connection is already
configured with the IP
address that is required for automatic IP addressing."

I don't have a pc with theIP of 192.168.0.1, my router is set at
192.168.0.2, I have one at .04, .05, .11 and .13

it has me confused, I was thinking that the pc can't deal with two lan
connections at the same time, even though I've telling them they have two
different IP adresses...

Regards.

Thanks for the details, Paul.

The problem is that the router and the other computers use the same
192.168.0.x IP address range that ICS assigns to the LAN connection.
The Internet connection and the LAN connection must use different
ranges.

The solution is to configure the router and the other computers to use
a different IP address range, such as 192.168.1.x.

Ok, I've tried that, changed all the IP's, now internet sharing works. Now I
have a dilemma, I don't know what your usage on ZoneAlarm is, but I'm not
knowing what settings to use to allow the machine (8 Bit) to access the
internet with ZoneAlarm is activated. I have shut down Zone Alarm and the 8
bit machine works via the shared internet off the laptop, but I turn it back
on, and bam, I can't access, so I know ZA is the problem. I generally know
how to use ZA as I've not had a problem with just the wireless connection
from the laptop, as it was one connection, now I've got two to play with,
and 4 different IP's (including the router) to play with. I've got the
Onboard LAN as ip 192.168.0.1, using Gateway 192.168.1.5 which is the
laptop's IP, and 192.168.1.5 is using the gateway of 192.168.1.2 which is
the router. The ip address of the 8 bit machine is 192.168.0.64 (I chose 64
as it is a commodore 64) using the gateway of 192.168.0.1.

If you don't use ZoneAlarm (or have done) I understand you not being able to
help me here, or you could recommend another free firewall that is a bit
more easy to use, so to speak.

Appreciate all your help on this matter..

Regards.
Paul.

You're welcome, Paul. What version of ZoneAlarm is running on the
host computer?

The free version of ZoneAlarm is incompatible with Internet Connection
Sharing. You need ZoneAlarm Plus or ZoneAlarm Pro to work with ICS on
the host computer. See:

Yes you are right, I'm running the free version, I'll have to opt to Windows
Firewall for now, even though I'm behind a hardware router, I still feel
safer having a firewall...

I'll have to go on the hunt for another free one.. =-) If I can't find one
and then I'll have to spend some money... :(
Anyways, again, thanks for all your help, I'm pleased I've achieved what I
needed.

Regards.
Paul.
