Trying to open text (*.txt) files does not launch NOTEPAD

I just installed Win XP Pro a few weeks ago, and noticed that when double-clicking a text file, it does not open. Right-clicking the text file and choosing "Open-With" also does not work. If I open the NOTEPAD program first, then I can open the text file using the "File->Open" menu.

Has anyone experienced this? If so, do you know how to fix this?

I am running XP Pro Service Pack 1 with all the latest critical updates. I have checked the file associations, and even tried to set the TXT extension to always open with the NOTEPAD program but it did not help.

Hey I have strted facing this problem suddenly too!!

Any luck? How did you solve this?
