Trying to make a network connection - XP Home

Hi

Trying to help a colleague set up his system - Running XP Home.

He has a broadband connection with BTinternet which is via a USB ADSL
modem.

When running the Home netwrok wizard it asks all manner of questions
which seem to insist that an internet connection should be made via the
network.

I gave up with all the combinations, so now want to try the setting
manually.

I clicked on the Local Connection / properties then highlighted TCP/IP
and then properties again. I then entered the IP address to use as
10.0.0.9 (which follows on from others in the network) and the subnet
mask as 255.255.255.0

I then close that down and restart. but I can't see any computers on the
network. Sometimes, after several re-boots, they can see me, but can't
exchange files.

The other computers run the more sympathetic Windows 98 or ME.

This morning when I tried again for him, We connected to the internet
and got an error message saying that: NT Authorising System reset remote
procedure call service terminating unexpectedly (or words to that effect
and the system shut down then restarted. It's done that a couple of
time.

I also got (once) Generic Host process for W32 services encountered a
problem and needs to close

What do I do???????

Hi Ron
I think he's got the msblaster virus which is causing the shut downs. He
should get updated antivirus software installed if he can before attempting
to create the network connection in case it's immediately infecting him
(from LAN or WAN) when he connects to the network. Updates from the
microsoft website will prevent reinfection by this worm, so he needs to get
those too.
When installing the network, make sure there's no network bridge between the
usb adsl connection and the LAN connection. The USB connection should be set
up to get automatic IP/DHCP etc. Only assign a static IP address to the LAN
connection if there's no DHCP service running on that network. Disable
internet connection firewall, it's pretty useless and can prevent sharing
over a lan.
Best to install someone elses firewall software rather than ICF if possible.
