Trying to import from an Excel worksheet

I have Outlook 2003 abd have an Excel spreadsheet sent to me by one of my
customers with company names, contacts, addresses, phone, fax, e-mail
addresses, etc.... - I would like to take this and import these into a
Contact folder - seems I can not do this -- If I leave as .xls file I get an
error message about named ranges - if I change to .csv or .txt - I do not get
the option to map my fields, the mapping button and the next button are
greyed out and all I can do is cancel the import. Any advice would be helpful

The error concerning Named Ranges is the thing - have you named the range?

Converting the Excel file to CSV has some drawbacks and it's really
unnecessary( you will lose all Excel functions in your Excel file and ...)
and this is the reason in the message you get doesn't say anything about
converting to CSV file. I worte this because I have seen several people in
this newsgroup suggesting this conversion
when there is a very simple step to achieve this procedure properly.
Here is how...
Open your Excel file and select the entire Table(area ) that contains the
data including the headings ( if each row doesn't have heading lable you need
to name each field) then either just simply type the name in namebox ( left
upper corner of the worksheet) or Insert\name\define and type anyname you
like (eg. MyRange) and save the Excel. Now you can easily import the data
and you won't see the error message anymore

Sorry for the typeo. I wrote each row must have heading which is obviously
wrong! I meant each column must have heading.

highlight all the data (select it) and then give the range a name. Precisely
how you do that depends on your version of Excel....

Leaving the "named range" topic to others who have responded, if the contact
folder that you want to import to is listed on the (left hand side) where
you Map Custom fields button is located - then the solution for importing
your CSV file may be as simple as making sure that the checkbox beside the
folder has a checkmark which in turn activates the Map/Next buttons.
