Trying to help a neighbour!

Hi.

My neighbour can copy photographs from his items in My Documents directly
onto a CD. He can then put this CD into his TV/DVD setup and view the photos
on his TV screen (and yes, I can do likewise!).

I've introduced him tp MS Photostory3 and he has now finished his first
project. He has burnt same to a CD as before and it plays fine on his (and
my) PC.

However, the Photostory3 item will NOT play on his TV/DVD setup (nor on
mine!).
Is there a simple reason for this?

Neither of us has a DVD player/burner in our PC's (both using XP Home).

Any advice welcomed. No expertise at all in this field!

TIA.

Apparently your DVD players are JPEG
compliant...this would explain why you can
view still JPEG images that are burned on
a data CD.

When you create a PhotoStory the result is
a .wmv video file...and I haven't seen a DVD
player that is compliant with a .wmv file.

The solution would be to import the .wmv file
into authoring software and create a VCD.
(VCD = Video CD...created on a CD-R blank)
(most DVD players are compatible with VCDs...
check your documentation)

MS Digital Image Suite Anniversary Edition
includes the 3.1 version of PhotoStory which
has the option to burn a VCD.

And personally I've had success burning VCDs
using InterVideo WinDVD Creator...and there
are many more possibles....Nero, ULead,
ProShow Gold, Roxio, etc, etc...

Be sure the software you purchase is compatible
with the .wmv format.

John - many, many thanks! :)

That was *very* helpful information ..... and has, perhaps, whet my appetite
to do more with my own photographs!

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, Yves.

I've had a quick look - there's much there to explore.
I have a feeling that I'll be spending a few hours there later on! :)

Cheers,

David

If you get just a "little more" interested you will probably be asking Santa
for a DVD burner. While the VCD slide shows are OK and work on most DVD
players (but not all), the quality will be much better if you create a DVD.
I use Roxio for creating DVDs, it is extremely easy to do so. Of course you
do need a DVD burner.

If you are moderately handy with working in your PC, it is relatively easy
to replace your CD drive with a DVD drive. You should be able to buy a DVD
drive for under $40. The DVD drive writes both CDs and DVDs.

Thanks for that Tom.

My wife has a DVD drive in her Acer Aspire 3000 laptop. I don't suppose you
know if there is a 'free' DVD burner (or a trial) available?

if it is a dvd burner and not
simply a dvd player, then
you likely have the software
installed already.

but if i'm not mistaken
that model is a dvd/cd rw,
meaning you can burn-cd's
and play only - dvd's

Instead of buying software though, you may want to consider buying a dvd
burner. At the price of Nero and other good software, you can almost buy the
burner and they all have software with them that will do what you need to
do.

You are most probably right "DatabaseBen" - I know little about such items!

Thank you for telling me - much appreciated. :)
