Trying to delete an Icon from taskbar

I do not have a wireless LAN connection but I have an icon on the taskbar
with a red cross through it which I want to get rid of. Clicking with the
mouse, left or right, shows up absolutely nothing, nor gives me any options
at all. It is now driving me nuts, it is a pointless icon taking up space and
time to load and I want rid of it but I can't seem to find a way.

The MS Help and support is useless and no help whatsoever. If anyone can
tell me how to get rid of it I will be truly grateful.

Many thanks

Control Panel | Network Connections | Right click and disable it.

That suggests you have a laptop that has Wireless hardware, present and
a connection there though not in use. Look in Control Panel - Network
connections for it. Right click, Properties, and uncheck the 'Show icon
in Notification area'. Then after OK, right click again and take
Disable

And it may have a physical switch on the machine's case - switch that
off to save battery usage

Or a simple solution:

Right-click an empty space on the taskbar, and choose 'properties', (or go
to Start menu, Settings, Taskbar & Start menu) - Make sure that 'Hide
Inactive Icons' is checked; then click customize, In the 'current Items'
list, choose the icon you don't want to see anymore (probably 'Wireless
Network Connection'), and click on the 'Hida when inactive' button, from the
pop up menu choose 'Always Hide'.

Hope this helps,

I have this same problem with a different twist. When I disable the LAN on
my new PC, my ISP does not function correctly even though I'm on dialup and
it shouldn't matter. I even tried disabling the LAN in the BIOS but it still
causes my dialup ISP to fail. Since it is an onboard LAN, I cannot
physically disconnect it.

Then I tried the 'always hide' option but the icon keeps resurrecting itself
after hibernation or when I try to connect to the internet. When it returns,
it always resets itself to 'hide when inactive'.

When I am on the internet for some time the icon eventually hides itself but
in the meantime it takes up space and is very annoying.

Is it possible to shorten the time before the 'hide when inactive' kicks in?
Where in the registry is it located? Any other suggestions are also welcome.

Thanks for your help.
