Trying to connect a Spanish Vista machine to an XP network

This one's proving to be a nightmare.

A colleague has a Spanish friend staying who wants to plug her laptop into
my friend's router (wired, not wireless), but needless to say he doesn't
know either Vista or Spanish!

Can anyone suggest a fairly simple walkthrough for connecting a Vista
machine to a router that we can try to translate on the fly?

Many thanks

Have you tried just plugging the lap top into the router? That usually
works.

Plug it in and see what happens. The laptop should pop up a message (in
Spanish) that says something like "new network discovered, do you want to
use it?" User presses "Sí" and everyone is happy.

Wired networks of the home variety do not normally use encryption or
authentication. If you are using MAC address filtering you may have to log
into the router and enable the MAC address of the laptop. Instructions are
model-specific, but many come with instruction manuals on CD in several
languages.

Earle

With a wired router there should be nothing to it. Just plug one end
of the cable into the router and the other end into the computer. The
computer will automatically make a DHCP request and get all the
necessary parameters, you won't have to do a thing.
