troubleshoot my laptop freezeing

Hello everyone, most recent I've had several pc hangs. Initially I thought
it was an application problem. It happend during a video capture, and
creating a DVD. After a quick reboot I get this message cannot find or
corrupt system32\drivers...\nfts.sys message. If I let sit 5+ minutes it
will reboot fine. It was not an appliaction problem. It has now frozen
while on the web, installing an application, and plain opening windows. I
just did a chkdsk /r twice and it froze both times. I suspect a partion
problem. I'm running xp home with SP2. Could it be SP2? I did not have
this problem before the upgrade. How can get info on what's going on. I've
done 3 reinstalls from the vendor restore disks. It's safe to say the
reinstalls has not resolved my issue. Will deleting the partion and make a
new one fix it? Does anyone think my HD is begining to fail. I appreciate
any help/suggestions. thanks.

Yes, I think that a failure in chkdsk from recovery console is a sure sign
of drive failure.
