Troubleshoot an unreliable machine part 2

GPO

I love aero glass. Except that every 10 minutes or so it crashes (reverts to
some horrible poor relation), and I have to repair it via Personalization >
Windows color and appearance > Open classic appearance properties...> Color
scheme > Aero Glass. The display adapter is an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT
(7.15.11.6369). Apparently this driver is up-to-date. Once again, howto
troubleshoot...

This problem is usually caused by one of these three: You run incompatible
software (old games in particular), the machine does not or does barely meet
Aero requirements, or you have a pirated Vista copy.

Windows Aero minimum requirements (click on the System Requirements link

You're wrong on every count.

Base score is 5.1 (graphics score 5.9). It happens when I'm doing nothing
more than running Internet Explorer 7. I'd hope that wasn't incompatible. It
is NOT pirated, thanks very much.

There is no need to be thin-skinned. You will find the very same suggestions
on Microsoft's support site.

Did you try tweaking the monitor and colour settings?

Since this error seems to happen when IE7 is run only, an add-in or
corrupted files may be the problem. First of all, use the Disk Cleanup Tool
(Accessories menu) to clean up anything IE related.

Next, fire up IE7 without add-ons (Accesories menu > System Tools). Use it a
while for what you usually do, and if the problem does not occur, you should
investigate which add-in may be causing it, which is a wee bit tedious
procedure.

In Internet Options > Program tab > Manage add-ins, deactivate all addins.
Now, turn them back on, one by one, booting IE7 each time in between you
enable a new one, and surf for a while to test each one. If you can identify
the culprit, disable it permanently or try to download a more recent,
functioning version.

I mentioned file corruption. To fix this, you should run the System File
Checker tool. Open up a command prompt as administrator (Accessories menu >
right-click icon and select Run as Admin). At the prompt, type "sfc
/scannow" (without the quotes). Keep your installation media close, SFC may
request to download files from it.
