trouble with windows updates

I own a Toshiba A55-S1063 laptop. I recently had to restore it using the
recovery disc provided by Toshiba. When I visit windows update I find that
there are 59 critical updates to be downloaded and installed. Once the
process is started the computer will get through anywhere from halfway to 2/3
of the way through the installations and hit a snag. Pop up balloons report
"delayed write failed" and the computer locks up. Trying to turn the comp
off and back on result in windows not being able to run because the file
windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. If anyone has run into
this and has ANY info at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Why did you have to do a recovery in the first place? This problem suggests
a hardware problem with the drive or drive controller and system.

Generally it's a good idea to just install updates a few at a time, no more
than 5, and test the sytem after each bunch so if there is a problem you
have only to remove 5 to troubleshoot this, but getting a delayed write
failure is a hardware issue. I would contact Toshiba tech support and see
about sending it in for service.

Yeah, looking at the system file in the event viewer there are warnings and
errors all over the place stating that the device\harddisk0\d has a bad
block. Does this mean I will need to replace the hard drive?

Make sure you have a full and complete backup. Then download a drive
diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site. That will create
a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the diagnostics. Be
prepared to replace the drive.
