Trouble with those Updates

Here is some reading on problems resulting from those unannounced
updates that Tim Clark brought to our attention here. It appears that some
updates are being blocked and if you had repaired XP your WU becomes
crippled. What was thought to be a harmless patch of updates looks like it
isn't.
If i find the other URL about this problem that i read i will post it
too. Ron

This is not too hard to fix, but fixing it requires that you notice that the
problem exists.

Currently the fix is much like others for windows update issues--dial-a-fix
is one way to go, or there's a list of dll's to re-register.

Microsoft is aware of the issue, and I have no doubt they will provide a
supported and automated fix.

Hi Bill, Yes it seems to be isolated situations - repaired systems and this
is the first i'm reading about this. Bill i'm experiencing something for a
week
or so now going from site to site has gotten slower. The blue progression
bar
(if thats what you call it) in the system tray has slowed down alot when
changing from page to page. Have you heard of this being related to these
updates ? Even going from announcements to general here my computer
is dragging it's feet. Ron

There are a lot of factors involved in that timing--traffic on your Internet
connection, the servers themselves.

This is not a symptom I would expect to be related to the update we are
talking about.

FWIW, SANS ISC quotes "Microsoft sources" as follows:

a.. We are aware of reports about customers not being able to download
some updates from Windows Update when using the latest version of the
Windows Update client and after reinstalling Windows XP system files from
CD.
b.. We take this issue very seriously and are investigating the root cause
of this behavior and what options are available to address it.
c.. Customers that are experiencing this issue are urged to contact
customer support at no charge at 1 (866) PCSAFETY
(http://www.microsoft.com/protect/support/default.mspx).
If you were on Vista, I'd advise running IE in no add-ons mode to see if
that changes the behavior. You could delete temporary internet files...
