Trouble with 3.5" H.D. External Case

Hi all,

I just bought this External IDE Case for my computer running on Abit
KA7RA with AMD 1700 and 1 Gig Memory.

I used Hard Drive which is currently working in my computer. My
computer recognizes both the interface of IEEE and USB with this
drive, I can see it in System Device control but not in Explorer. Why
it should be so, any ideas.

A couple of things come to mind that may be causing problems. I'm sure
others here may have other ideas that might help with the problem.

1. One of the more common problems is not having the hard drive jumper set
to the Master rather than Slave or Cable select. I have heard a few
adaptors that might work with the drive in the CS mode but so far I have not
had my hands on one that worked in that mode.

When using a USB/IDE adaptor you almost always have to set the hard drive
jumper settings to be the Master position.
If you adding say two USB/IDE external chasses, both drives would still be
set for Master. The USB protocol takes over and keeps the drives from
interfering with each other if both are plugged in at the same time.

2. If you are not using XP the computer might need to use different USB
drivers than those it is currently trying to use. With the better USB
adaptor cases there is usually a CD included that contains a few non-XP
drivers.

3. If the external case is expecting the computer to power it and the drive,
with no AC power cord or transformer, it's possible your USB port is either
not supplying the needed voltage or does not have enough capacity to do it
correctly. I have seen a couple of people add an externally powered USB hub
between the computer and hard drive to supply the voltage needed.
