Trouble w/ Remote Desktop Connection to Win Server 2003

M

Mason Flint

I have all of my music on a Windows Server 2003 box which
is connected to my stereo. When I connect to the server
using Remote Desktop I select the Local Resources tab and
Leave at Remote Computer. But when I start up WMP (on the
Windows Server), I get the following error:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is
a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound
device installed on your computer, it may be in use by
another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

I know the sound card is working because when I start WMP
directly from the server it plays.

Any ideas?

Much thanks.

Two things to do:

1. Connect to the Windows 2003 Server console session. You do this
by using the following command: "mstsc /v:servername /console". This
will allow to use local hardware (pending #2).
2. If, after you do what is suggested in Step 1 and still don't get
audio, you need to do the RD/Audio workaround of starting Windows
Media Player (or other device that captures the sound card hardware)
before accessing your server through the RD connection.

Yep.. This is a known issue that should be fixed in the next service
pack timeframe...
