Trouble re-installing W2K pro

T

Tommy

W2K pro install fails half way through "H/W problem contact vender" !!!
Win me (OEM) installs fine every time.
Read somewhere that :

1. Formating the HD with LINUX to clean every trace of previous WIN, or
2. ZERO fill to overwrite all existing data.

Q1) Is there a floppy startup LINUX similar to Win98 floppy which I use to
format the HD ? Sure hate to dl 720 meg then burn onto CD just for the sake
of formating the HD.

Q2) Zero fill program anyone ?

TIA

It is a myth that Win2000 takes any notice of the data that
was previously on your hard disk. To the installation program,
a repartitioned and reformatted disk is indistinguishable from
a zero-filled disk.

If you want an assurance that your hard disk is OK,
download and run the disk diagnostic routine that your
hard disk manufacturer makes available on his home site.
Some of these routines include a sector by sector format
utility.

Then why W2K refused to re-install couple of times previousely ?
I got around it then by installing Win me (OEM) then W2K.

This time W2K categorically refuses ???

If there is H/W prob Win me would be impacted the same way as W2K !!!

PS: HD & MEM health checked OK

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting Win2K? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Bear in mind that PCs
designed for and sold with Win9x/Me very often do not meet Win2K's
much more stringent hardware quality requirements. This is
particularly true of many models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario
product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion product line. Win2K,
like WinNT before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.Me.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are Win2K device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me.
