Trouble at startup

I have recently purchased a new computer which I assembled. I have
installed my Windows XP Professional on to a single partition, updated
it to SP2 and have now installed all of the Windows updates.

I am having an occasional problem during startup where the hard drive
powers off or resets. I can hear it do this. Windows will hang and
cease to load and I will have to manually reset the computer.

I have updated every driver from the manufacturer's websites and
flashed the latest bios. Since it is all new hardware I can't rule
out defective hardware, but I have a suspicion it's a Windows problem
since there is no other trouble.

I need to know if there is a way to log or look at the files being
loaded during startup. Any suggestions how I can troubleshoot this
would be greatly appreciated.
