I am running a SuperTalent 30 GB SSD with a PATA interface as a main drive
(two partitions, WinXP currently installed and Win7 to come). The
specifications sheet is available online. As I recall, the manufacturer says
that trim is handled in the background by the interface. I also use a
Duracell 32 GB SDHC card formatted in exFAT. The exFAT driver software is
bloated with a lot of proprietary bells and whistles (good stuff that passes
benchmarks with flying colors.) Microsoft is mum on trim. I guess trim is
handled silently.

I also have an 8GB OCZ USB flash with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed on ext4.
Trim is handled explicitly in fstab with a "discard" parameter. I have no
idea if it works properly. ext4 was not designed with solid state drive in
mind, so I expect failure in the future.

There is a heck of a lot of "revealed knowledge" in the talk about SSD's. I
don't believe 1% of it.

As I understand SSD, an erase block can range from 256 KB to 1 MB. If the
software or Flash Translation Layer cannot find a "clean page" anywhere, a
block erase is require which might slow down write by one block erase time,
maybe 1 ms. ? I don't know. I just know that I do benchmarks and every one
else is looking for revealed knowledge.
