I was fiddling around with my Outlook 2000 mail configuration and made a
big boo boo. I hope someone can help. I am running Microsoft Office 2000
Professional running on Win98.

I was fiddling around with Outlook and tried to add a new Exchange Server
to my list of accounts. I restarted the computer as directed and was then
prompted by Windows Installer to insert the Microsoft Office 2000
Professional installation CD. Problem is I don't have it--it was loaned to
me by a friend and I forgot that I gave it back. So I figured oh well,
never mind the Exchange Server. But when I tried to cancel the Windows
Installer and go back to Outlook to change my account information back, it
says:

"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office
2000 Professional. The Windows installer cannot continue."

After clicking OK, I get this:

"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging
softward. Please reinstall Outlook."

So I renamed and replaced the dll file hoping that would solve the problem
but I still can't start Outlook. The Windows Installer keeps starting up
and trying again, and the whole process described above starts over.

So is there any way I can resolve this tonight or do I absolutely need the
installation CD.

Sorry this got so long. I hope someone can help.

Hi Elissa,
for Error 1706 please read
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298385
so its better to get the Cd.

After clicking OK, I get this:

"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging
softward. Please reinstall Outlook."

for this MAPI32.DLL error read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316053/en-us

So in the end you need the installation CD to work with Office.
