Treo 700w memory usage

H

Hilton

Hi,

Any else seen the 700w eating LOTS of memory - (reportedly) up to where
there is only 1M left. App works just fine or every other Pocket PC (2002,
2003, 2003SE, and WM 5.0).

Thanks,

Hilton

Hilton,

From what I can tell, the Treo 700w just doesn't have a lot of memory to
start with compared with my other WM 5 devices.

What I noticed, on the Verizon emulator, is that there seems to be a lot of
memory allocated to files, and very little to programs. But there is no
slider on the Memory applet in WM5. Are these values adjusted automatically?

Good question, Philip. Unforunately I don't know, but the behavior doesn't
seem to indicate that it does.

I agree with your assessment about the amount of memory available to
programs. On my K-Jam the memory allocation is about 47.5/50 mb for memory,
while the Treo 700w allocates 63/25.5 mb for storage/program memory. With
Activesync, Outlook, Pictures and Videos and Windows Media running the K-Jam
drops to 25.7 mb free but the Treo goes down to 10.2mb free.

Philip,

I would appreciate if you could provide me a link where to get the verizon
emulater?

I downloaded mine from the Palm site.

Ginny,
From what I can tell, the Treo 700w just doesn't have a lot of memory to
start with compared with my other WM 5 devices.

The customer said that available memory dropped by 25M or so (I forget the
exact number) and ended up with only 1M free. The entire device suddenly
because sluggish. Again, app works fine on *lots* of other Pocket PC
devices. So now I need to figure out if it is a Pocket PC, Tree 700w, CF,
or app problem, and what the heck is special about the 700w.

I'm hoping to download the emulator and try it there - I'm hoping it is VS
2003 compatible (I noticed it only mentioned VS2005)

Thanks,

Hilton

Looks like emulator requires 5.0 SDK, and 5.0 SDK requires VS2005.

Slightly OT: I've heard VS2005 is great, but has numerous bugs such as slow
text input and other things and a rumor of a large 'update' later this year?
Any truth in these rumors? Can I feel safe moving to VS2005? I guess I
will anyway, but help me remove any nervousness. Thanks! :)

Also, for those who have upgraded, would you have upgraded based solely on
its new features, or did you upgrade because of 5.0 and the new emulators
etc? [Note: your response could be a combination]

Thanks again for all the very valuable input from this group!

Hilton,

Yes you should feel safe. I've been using VS 2005 pretty much exclusively
since beta 2, so I think that should tell you something about how I like it
compared with VS 2003. Both versions of VS can coexist though. I've actually
found VS 2005 to be quicker on my hardware except for maybe loading Help.
There will always be updates, and certainly an update to VS 2005 is planned,
but I don't think you should wait for it. The current version is very solid.

I love the new emulators - much nicer, and the ability to connect to them
via Activesync. I love CF 2.0 - fast, solid, functional. I really love the
data tools in VS 2005 for working with SQL Mobile data. I can't think of a
single thing I like better about VS 2003 unless it's the ability to work
with old hardware, and I can't honestly say that I love old hardware. ;-) I
do have to support some occasionally though.

Hi Ginny,

Did you have any trouble "connecting" with this emulator? The regular
emulators work OK (for me), but I cannot deploy to the Treo.

I did receive an error message, one time, that implied a problem with the
Virtual Device, but each time after that, there is simply an "unable to
deploy" error, with no additional information.

Regards, Dick

I would add that CF2 is a lot nicer than CF1. I would recommend at least 1GB
of RAM though.

Hi Dick,

Yes I did. The Treo emulator doesn't appear to support DMA, which all the VS
2005 emulators do. The error message I got was this: Failed to open VPC
Network Driver. Verify that the driver is installed or install the driver
from Web download location www.go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=46859. I
assume that's the error message you got too. I've been busy with other
projects and haven't followed up on this yet.

Philip,

I agree. In fact, I have 2 Gb and even on a relatively slow processor, the
performance isn't bad.

I had seen that link, but it is broken. I did a search for it, but couldn't
locate the download. Perhaps I can find something on Palm's site.

Hi Dick,

Yes the link was broken for me as well, and I'm also a little reluctant to
potentially mess up my VS 2005 installation anyway since all the other
emulators work great.
