transmitting large amounts of unwanted data

Every time I connect to the internet, my pc starts
transmitting large-and I mean HUGE, like many many meg-
amounts of data in a continuous stream without ever
stopping or letting up. No browser up, with the browser
up, it doesnt matter. Do I have a spyware virus, is
someone taking a copy of my hard drive?? How do I find
out the ip address this is going to, and MUCH more
importantly, how do I stop it???!!!

well you could use firewall to stop it. but that do not cure PROBLEM.

Here's 5 steps that EVERY computer owner should do (or have for last two
steps) if they want to make sure their system is not infested with spyware,
trojans and viruses...

1. first download spybot seek & destroy from http://security.kolla.de
install it, update it, and RUN it...

2. second, download AdAware from www.lavasoft.de install it, update it,
RUN
it...
--- sofar you should have spyware free system ---

3. third, download spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html install it, "update" it
and RUN it...

--- after this you should have system that's protected from some spyware
stuff, not ALL though ---

4. get yourself virus killer if you do not have... www.grisoft.com has free
virus killer it you bother dig up more their site to download free version,
install, update and run it...

--- after this your system should be protected from most viruses ---

5. get yourself FIREWALL if you do not have it... Usually free firewall like
ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) will do...

--- and after this step, you should beable to see when something in your
system tries to connect outside from your system etc ---

There are three possibilities here.
1) You could have some spyware on your system. There are several free
spyware removal tools on the internet. Searching Google for "spyware
removal" will find you lots of information. Two of the more commonly
mentioned tools in the newsgroups here are Adaware and Spybot. Make sure
that you get the most current definitions if you already have one of these
tools installed since new stuff is added all the time.

2) You have a virus. If you don't have a virus scanner, you should get one.
More information to information about protecting your system can be found at
http:/www.microsoft.com/protect , including an offer for a free year of
antivirus software from Computer Associates.

3) You have Peer to Peer file sharing software on your machine and people
are downloading files from your computer. Normally these programs have an
icon in the area by the clock. You can also check the Start Menu under
Programs for these programs. Some of the more common ones are Kazaa, Kazaa
Light, Morpheus, and Imesh, though there are others. You can either
configure the program not to share files with people on the internet, or
uninstall it.
