Transferring Multiple User Accounts from 98SE to XP when Upgrading

Am I correct in assuming that the MS F.A.S.T. routine will actually transfer
(assuming it is set up correctly ) all the data from every profile on the
old 98 package to XP when upgrading. Do you have to specify the individual
profiles when you list the files for transfer? I know that for each
additional user account on the old PC I should just run the "Settings Only"
transfer but what about all the information in each profile including
documents etc under "My Docs". I can't seem to find any info confirming this
one way or another.
Thanks

You aren't going to get much out of FAST from 98 to XP, really. You
probably have whole different versions of any applications it would be
transferring settings for - and the look/fell - that will be pretty well
blasted.

Log in as each user on Windows 98 - run FAST as each user. Do this using
the version on the Windows XP CD and use the same version from that CD when
importing onto the XP machine - not the version on the machine itself. Make
sure all the applications you really want to move the settings for (that
FAST will actualy do) are installed on the XP system *before* you import
each user profile. As for running "settings only" - doesn't really matter -
I would think you would be better off running Files And Settings for every
user - as they will actually be seperate users finally when they get on the
Windows XP system.

Now you said "upgrading". If you are actually upgrading the OS on the
Windows 98 machine to XP - why are you using FAST?

Shenan,
It is basically belts and braces. If something goes wrong with the upgrade,
then the last resort will be a clean install with importing the F.A.S.T.
info. ( I do actually have two drives on the system. The second is a
(bootable) copy (using Seagate Disc Wizard Starter Edition to copy) of the
"C" drive. The aim is install XP on the main drive, leaving the second as it
is for the time being. So if you can suggest another way of
upgrading/installing, ensuring that data is protected, then I am all ears).

Sure. You could image the entire system. Using something like...

Symantec/Norton Ghost
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/

Acronis True Image
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage

BootIt™ NG
http://terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

Then install.

Personally - if you already have done all that, having the bootable exact
copy and all that - you could just disconnect, upgrade and if thing went
bad - you already have a replica. You could even hook the replic up and get
data off it if needed later - as it is just a FAT32 replica - right?

Yes, it is an exact copy with FAT32. . Presume XP can backward read to
FAT32? Would it just be a case of dragging files across if they didn't
transfer with the upgrade? Would I have to do something different with OE if
need be?
