Transferring Documents

Paul Berger

On my old computer (Windows 98), I used as my word
processor Microsoft Works 95 as I was comfortable with
it. I have just purchased a new computer (Windows XP) and
it came with Corel Word Perfect 11 as the word processing
program. I save all my documents from my old computer
onto a disk. I tranferred this data to the new computer
but I cannot open this data up because Word Perfect 11
won't let me. How can I make my saved data compatible
with the new word processing program? I have downloaded
Microsoft Word but that doesn't seem to help either.
Thanks for any help.

If you still have access to old comptuer open files and save as RTF file. Then copy the RTF file to new computer and all word processors will open. Be aware that you will lose all formatting as RTF is for text only.

Be aware that you will lose all formatting as RTF is for text only.

Actually, you shouldn't lose ANY formatting as RTF is "rich text" and
it will include most formatting unless WordPerfect's file filter is,
well, less than "perfect."

But all that aside, WordPerfect SHOULD open MSOffice docs. I only have
one computer with WordPerfect and I'll have to check what's up....

Rather than saving all your docs as RFTs my suggestion would be to
delete office from your old PC and install it on your new one.

His problem was importing old Microsoft Works objects, not Office.
WordPerfect may not have a converter for older versions of Works.

If the OP checks the WordPerfect site, (corel.com?), he may be able to
search for additional converters.

Yeah, should have recommended installing Works on the new machine
rather than Office.
