transfer user profiles to new domain

I am about to migrate several WinXP users to a new domain. How can I keep
their existing local profiles (settings) in the new domain?
Export HKCU Registry and then reimport the .REG file back under the new
account? Any recommendations or pitfalls?

I would probably do this for each user:
1. Log on under the domain account.
2. Reboot.
3. Log on as an admin.
4. Copy the user's old profile folder to the domain profile
folder via the Control Panel / Users / Advanced / User
Profile / copy facility.
