Transfer of data from one computer to another

P

Paul

We have a home desktop running Windows XP home which has four user accounts.
Our son has just received a new laptop running Windows Vista Premium for his
birthday and what he wants to do in effect, is, to transfer all of his
data...effectively his account..from our desktop directly to his new laptop.
Can this be done easily and if so, how would you go about doing that?

(Ideally, the way I would envisage it is to somehow be able to interconnect
the two computers and then directly transfer all of the data. Just how you
would do that I don't know so any help would be most appreciated)

Many Thanks

Paul .

You can transfer if the PC's are networked, or if you buy a 'transfer'
direct connection cable.
The easiest method if niether the above apply is to use a memory stick to
copy data

Any commercial Windows Vista disk has the "Easy Transfer" utility on it.
You simply run the program, choose which profile/data and it saves the
content as SaveData.Mig. You can store on a CD/DVD-R or Flash drive
and simply import the data store from the Vista machine.
If you don't have a Vista DVD you can download the Easy Transfer tool
from Microsoft's web site.

If it were me, I would just transfer the data, and not try to do the
whole account.

You can easily transfer the data in many ways. Setting up a network
between the two is more expensive and more of an effort than any of
the others, and I wouldn't do that unless you wanted to keep the
network in place, not just transfer the data.

How best to transfer the data depends in large part on how much there
is to transfer. One easy way if there isn't a lot is to E-mail it from
one computer to another.

If there's too much data to make that convenient, I would simply burn
the data to a CD or copy it to a thumb drive, then read the CD or
thumb drive on the laptop.
